priming fuel pump?

firing up the 74 F100, first time since May. New gas tank, sender unit, fuel lines, and filter. I'm not seeing any fuel at the fuel pump. I disconnected the rubber hose going from tank to frame rail and there was back there. should I pour some fuel into the line going from tank to pump, to prime the pump?

Easier to put it in at the fuel pump connection end, (where the frame line goes from solid to rubber) or use a hand pump to draw it from the tank to prime the line.

Prime the mechanical fuel pump first with a short line into a gas can, and hand prime the carb with a little bit, one it runs from the gas can and you have the line primed it should draw if from the tank.

ive primed the lines by holding a rag at the gas filler and shoot a lil air in the tank from a blow gun. youll hear it go bloop and start running out

nice. I actually thought of that last night, but my air compressor bit the big one two weeks ago. what i didn't think of was using my shop vac (in reverse) to blow a little air in the tank. In fact, probably safer to use the weaker push of the shop vac blower than compressed air.

i'm trying to shortly. i've really never had completely empty lines on any car i've owned and knowing how a mechanical F/P works, those suckers just can't pull fluid well. they can push it, but they don't pull well.

We hook a rubber fuel line to the carb inlet and using a small funnel, fill the carb bowl. Then hook the line back to the fuel pump, the engine fires right off, and gives the pump plenty time to prime.

hey the reverse shop vac would be more than enough push for that! sorry to hear about your compressor. the big compressor we have in the shop at work has been around since the place was built and our boss changes the oil in it with some MOA additive(like an oil treatment) and it keeps on keepin' on!

I havent had much issues with priming the pump itself as long as the line was primed like i did i was always fine. it also depends what kind of pump. the 460 i had and most of the older ones had the fuel filter can on the bottom of the pump, i always tried to keep that can full of fuel also. ive never even had to fill the carb either, just dumped a few capfulls down the intake to get the motor to fire for a few seconds and run the pump

Just did it. Or I should say over did it. Spewed gas right up to the pump and unfortunately on me (out the filler neck). Didn't see it coming....Now for da bowl.

Nice. no, it was my fault. seriously, one of my dogs came over to the truck while i was turning on my vacuum/blower. I sorta lost track of how much air i put in it.
