Needing a tow?

I was just browsing through the manual for another thread and found that 4x4 trucks (with electronic shift) should ONLY be towed on a flat bed. A wheel lift is OK to lift the rear wheels, but Ford recommends a flat bed tow truck or damage to the transfer case can occur.

Yes, while it's the same transfer case, for whatever reason the ESOF motor drive setup lacks a stop at the neutral position.

you could also wheel lift it with dollies.

Info taken from towing web site for slightly older trucks (2003-2005) than the 6.4 due to no info on the 2008+. Tow specs may be the same for the 2008+

"4X4 Transmission Settings 4X4 with Electronic Shift Transfer Case 1) Place Transmission in Neutral 2) Place Transfer Case in 2H; note with ignition switch turned on, the 4x4 & Low Range indicator lights will be off when vehicle is in 2H! If you have no power or cannot insure that vehicle is in 2H, load onto flatbed or place on dollys. 3) If vehicle is equipped with locking hubs, place hubs in Automatic or Free. Vehicle may be towed at 35 mph for 50 miles from front or rear. 4X4 with Manual (lever operated) Transfer Case (F250 – F550 & Excursion) 1) Place Transmission in Neutral. 2) Place transfer case in Neutral. Transfer case neutral setting is located between 4H & 4L. The lever must be moved slightly to the left and rearward of the 4H position. With ignition switch turned on, the 4x4 & Low Range indicator lights will be off when the transfer case is in Neutral! If you have no power or cannot insure that the transfer case is in N, load onto flatbed or place on dollys. 3) If vehicle is equipped with locking hubs, place hubs in Automatic or Free Vehicle may be towed at 55 mph for an unlimited distance from front or rear.
