Going from 1990 F-150 Custom to a 2001 F-150 extended cab

Hey guys, looks like I will be switching subforms to 1997-2003 F150. My 1990 transmission went out and I'm selling that and a family friend offered to give me his 2001 F150 that he was going to send to the crusher. A little info on it. My grandfather bought it probably back in 03 or 04 from an auto auction. He used that for probably 5 years and then handed it off to our family friend. He has used it since, and hes getting a new truck now so it is becoming mine. It is dark green, 4x2, and mainly stock. It has 300k+ miles on it. I am not sure exactly what all it has but I will be getting it towards the end of this month. I already read the sticky with the turn signal/wiper switch going bad because he told me his turn signals and windshield wipers don't work. That should be an easy junkyard pull. Is there anything I should do to it maintenance wise as soon as I get it besides fluid changes? Common problems to look for? Words of wisdom?

Thanks!

I believe it has the 5.4. Are tuners worth anything on these?

IMO consideration of "tuners" for a pickup with "300+ miles on it" that the owner was "going to send to the crusher" would be far down the list of priorities.

Well I learned more about the truck today. It is actually a 2000. Only reason he was going to send it to the crusher was because he didn't think anyone would want it because the turn signals and windshield wipers don't work but I believe its the switch. Only reason I said tuner would be for any sort of mileage gain if that was even possible on these. I also found out that my grandfather didn't buy it from an auction, it was bought new from the dealership.

Exclamation

If it's been in a rust prone area, check the bottom of the radiator support sheet metal. Very labor intensive to fix, although the metal itself costs just $100.

I think it depends on where the truck is registered; where corrosion is an issue.
I never got the recall, as I'm in Montana, and we don't have a rust issue. My straps also look good.
