Smile '87 6.9 4x4 tans swap from T19 - ZF5

My name is Ted, I am new b to this site.

1987 F250 6.9 4x4 project

Currently have the old granny 4 speed (I think it is a T19). I would like to change to a ZF5 speed. Would I need to change the bell housing and clutch as well? What about the computer? What about my transfer case and drive shafts?

If I buy a 7.3 with ZF5, will the computer then be OK? Being a later model ie 88-92, would I need a new cross member and drive shaft adjustments as well? Would it have to be out of a 4x4?

Hope this isn't too much for one post.

Thanks

the zf 5spd has a married bell housing so yes you will need to get a new clutch for this swap keep in mind when buying a new clutch to stay away from the dual mass clutch and flywheel set up because alot of people say they arent very reliable and that you want a single mass.. as for your computer when running a t19 or a zf 5spd the computer doesnt control anything so that will not be an issue...also on 4x4 vehicles equipped with zf 5 spd's ive noticed that the shifter for the transfer case is on the side of your tranny hump in the floor instead up on top where your '87 is so you will have to cut a hole there to make that work but its not a big issue at all...as for your transfer case someone else will have to chime in because im not sure if the one off of your t19 will work on a zf or not....anyways i hope this helps point you in the right direction

Thanks Bulldawg - I appreciate the info. It sounds like the ZF5 will bolt right in and would be the same length as the T19? I am pretty sure from what I have read that the ZF5 will have to come from a 4x4.

thanks again

I swapped a Lima pattern 4x4 ZF into my 460 truck.
Ford used the same T/C adapter and bolt pattern on all 'married' 4x4's
It was the same overall length as my T-19, and the drive shafts both worked fine.
I ended up just using the 1356 transfer case linkage from the T-19 on the ZF.
It bolted up the same and put the stick in the right place without any cutting.

I *think* the same would hold true of diesel pattern ZF's, but I can't speak from personal experience.

Biggest hurdle was moving the crossmember rearward to meet the newer transmission mount location.
The upper braces of the ZF equipped trucks are offset so you wouldn't have to drill new holes in the upper frame rail.

I'd like to add that the slave cylinder from my T-19 bellhousing slipped right off and clipped on to the ZF's integral bell.
Just take precautions to keep the spring loaded piston from popping all the way out.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you will need to find a diesel ZF with the 4X4 case. It is possible to convert a 2WD case to 4WD, but you'll have to take the transmission apart, change output shafts, and of course the rear housing. It is easier and cheaper to just find a 4WD model to begin with.
