'97 - '04 Fender Flares on an earlier truck

Anyone ever try mounting up the later gen flares on our '87 - '96 truck? I'm thinking that the size of the wheel well is about the same, just the body-line contour that is a bit different, and perhaps that could be addressed with a bit of creativity. And since these flares have some depth to them (unlike the '05+ flares), there's material to work with.

Yes, I know you can still buy new flares for our truck from a couple different suppliers, but I'm looking for a $20 junkyard solution.
