DTC p2285 and p2290

My wife drove the truck and it died on her, had it towed back to house. I just got back into town and hooked up the AE to it. DTC codes of 2285 and 2290. Disconnect ICP and per AE ICP pressure shoots up to 1377 or so. Long crank and no start. Reconnect ICP and pressure gradually gets to 560-590. Cranks alot and then acts like its gonna start. At one point it did but not the usual diesel clatter, it made a swooshing noise. Shut off immediately. Reset dtc's and only code that came up was 2285 again, no 2290. Does it sound like the sensor, or is this the HPOP? Could the IPR be the culprit? I would hate to change the sensor and it still not work.....Mileage is at 130300.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

What year is your truck and what is the FICM voltage doing KOEO and while cranking?

2004 excursion, ficm is showing good at 48.5-49.5. 2285 is for ICP circuit failure/low pressure. 2290 is ICP Injector control pressure too low at specified time. P2290 now doesnt show up. I just swapped out a ICP from my brothers truck but truck does the same, so its not the sensor. I am not sure if it is the IPR or HPOP. i am thinking the HPOP. It will eventually crank but makes a swooshing sound, so injector clatter noise at all......

Does the starting improve / get worse depending on parking the truck over night nose up or nose down?

No it is the same. When it died on her it was level and wouldn't, start. It is parked at a slight nose down angle and when it did seem to fire/start today it made the swoosh noise but no diesel injector clatter.

For whats its worth I did compare the IPR % in my 04 to my brothers 05 f250. Both with KOEO showed about 14 % or so. When his starts it held steady at 22-24 when reved up to 2000 rpm it went to about 36. Mine on the other hand when cranking it was showing 85 % and stayed really high. I am hoping its the IPR and not the HPOP. the swooshing noise is suspicious, but if the IPR is not allowing pressure to build then that would explain the lack of diesel injector clatter.

Yes, Valve cover. Replacing didn't change anything. I am going to try and replace IPR tomorrow and see what happens. Hopefully I can post with some good news and info for others who may have the problem.

UPDATE THUS FAR:

Did an air test and can hear air, but per some online info a little air is normal. Cycled IPR and air noise does stop, but can't hear any leaks coming from valve covers. Pulled IPR and screen assembly was stuck inside HPOP cover and cracked. Fished it out with a dental pick. May be a combination of bad IPR and a HPOP. Parts are on order. Hopefully I can get it reassembled and working by Monday night.

After the HPOP is installed, any tips in getting it to fire back up? Should I just expect a long crank time till it gets pressure to fire and drive around to bleed air out?

Blade, thanks for the info on standpipes and dummy plugs. For some reason I thought that was for the 05-07 models. I am the original owner and that stuff hasn't been touched on this truck, so since Ill have the turbo off, might as well tackle those as well.

And you are correct. Even though your '04 engine uses wavy high pressure oil rails, it uses 1/2" square drive style rail plugs and standpipes which tend to have a far lower failure rate than the 10mm allen head style used on later '05 to '07 model years.

Late 04-07 needs upgraded plugs and pipes. When refilling engine with oil, pour at least 2qts straight through oil filter housing to get it to the hpop quicker for a little quicker crank time.

Upgrading the standpipes and dummy plugs won't hurt will it? I figured since I am in there might as well do it.

All mike is saying is your style standpipes and Plugs Dont have the High Fail rate

So you may leave them and Still be OK
