1G alternator options?
Today I notice a slite bit of alternator whine from my '77 F-150's original still Ford 1G _ 60 amp alternator. The number on it is D7AE 10300 EA.
I guess I'll soon be considering whether to swap in a later style 3G alternator or simply to rebuild / upgrade this one.
I wonder, has anyone here used the upgrade kits that promise 80 amps?
Part # HO-7003 Ford 1G Series 80A Alternator Upgrade/Repair Kit
That and a set of bearings I'm thinking?
522 Alternator Bearing Kit 6203 and Needle Bearing
Thoughts?

GM 1 wire 120 amp alt. Just for the simple fact that if & when that taurus alt goes bad its gonna cost ya what?? $200 for a new one or around a $100 to have it rebuilt. Where as the GM is dirt cheap new/used/rebuilt. I know its a GM part blah blah blah & I hate useing anything GM but just thought id throw that out their for another option.

Btw...gm, dodge, ford...who cares. Isn't that what hot rodding is all about? No backlash here! I look forward to all the junk people are going to talk when they hear about the engine swap I'm going to do

Lol. I'm doing the GM 1 wire in mine just because their isn't a single good part on any worthless tuarus ever made and most of the alt's are a nitemare to get off of them. Mite as well slap a pintos badge on that pile of **** car and call it a day. Dang alt's for them are worth more than the stupid cars worth. Hahaha

I was at my My brother in law's place over the holidays ... he lives in Conyers Ga now, he did live in Muscadine, Alabama .... and commuted to his job in Atlanta .... high miles. His 1996 Mercury Sable will trip 500,000 miles in the very very near future. Transmission was rebuilt once, it's had some ball joints, tie rod ends, brakes, and some vacume tubing replaced .... but it get's the job done.

3G taurus alternator - 23-35 at an arizona junkyard. add on external regulator kit to allow the guages to work, 27 - so 65 total +/- and you have 130 amps.
cheaper than the conversion kit that only gives you 80 (at full driving speed btw, not idle, where you really need the power if you are running an electric fan and AC), cheaper than the aftermarket boosted 1G, cheaper than the AutoBone or O'really? 3g rebuit.

Who in their right mind would want to fight 3 or 4 alt's off of taurus's ? I can understand why a shop charges $500 to do it on top of he $200 for the alt. In the book it calls for the motor to be lifted up so you can get to the thing. Yeah you can break out the BFE & crowbar to make it a little easyer but its still a PIA.
Yep I'm sticking with the GM 1 wire. Who honestly needs a full 130 amps at idle? I mean come on if a 70 amp alt can handle a thumper radio or four 210 watt off road lights what's the point? No I can't run the radio & the lights at the same time but if the lights are on I should prolly be watching the road not jamming out to the tunes right......

You can buy new 3G alts for around $100. They're pleanty of them out there just have to think out side the box. My brand new one was $92 shipped to my door and no, it isn't a rebuilt one. I may have spent a few extra minutes finding one on the net, but it was worth it. Ended up getting it from a engine shop that was in Dallas TX. Matter of fact, I decided against the GM 1 wire alt because i could only find it in chrome at the time I was lookin' for one. Then of course I happened across a chrome GM Sagnaw pump with case and hardware for dirt cheap.......hind site, should have went with the GM alt to match the PS pump.
