3G install on 1990 Bronco?

How hard is it to do? Been reading a little about it. Is it worth it? Some say it is.

EdgeThis has a 93 IIRC, and fit a 3G to it. It should be in his thread somewhere. I think he had to us new wires and stuff but the biggest issue might be the mounting bracket. I don't know for sure.

Hey this might help. 3G Interchange Facts. If you're thinking 3G read here. - FSB Forums It has "need to know" info on the 3G installations.

If it's the typical "2G" that has the B+ output via a plug in the case, do it... before it burns. We had a close call on a 1990 302 car. If not for quick thinking and action, the car would have burned. It was real close. A white-hot arc at that crappy connector was burning all the plastic anywhere near it, and I could not put it out with a towel. The battery had to be disconnected before I could snuff it out.

On that car, we used a 3G from a 1994 Mustang, it was the 7" ear mount. We had to clock the case 1/4 turn to get its plug into a suitable direction. The single-wire connector, and the multiwire connector that plugs into the 3G's regulator we got at a Ford dealer. May be able to pick those up at a parts store, but we had to work fast.
We also had to drill out one of the mounting ear holes just a little bit larger. I chucked the other ear into a vise, and put masking tape over the cooling slots in the case so no drill shavings would go inside.

Can't beat the B+ output being a stud connection, like they used to be. That high-amperage connector in the case of the 2G was a dumb idea. It just isn't a big enough connector, can't keep reliable contact pressure over time. And too much contact resistance in a high-amperage connection = heat.

I installed a 1995 Mustang 130G alt in my 90 Bronco

...back in 2003.

I was going to install an electric fan and that useless stock alternator couldn't support anything but the minimal original equipment.

I had to grind the bracket and do the wiring.

It's been wonderful and no problems since...and I never did install the electric fan.

Cost me ~130 bucks (+tax) in 2003 at Autozone...just looked and it's about 155 bucks now. It has lifetime warranty so I'm not worried about it failing since Autozone is quite good about honoring them (only problem I've ever had with them is when they wouldn't honor it for my Nissan pickup because it would half-azz pass their weak test..they still gave me a 10% discount, but that really annoyed me since I knew it wasn't intermittently working right).

Well...can't really see anything now, but here are some..

Once installed there isn't much to see.

Here is a thread with some good pics. As you can see there isn't too much to grind. I have an air tool and it's quick and easy. I suppose you could do it with a dremel tool ..it'll just take a little longer.

Crazed 3G install (56k be very aware) - FSB Forums

I did this to my 1990 and I had a friend with a 92. So he asked me to help him do the same thing to his. He was funny - I also helped him change his fuel pump but he didn't want to cut a hole in the deck, so we had to drop his tank......until the 2nd time it failed on him....THEN we cut a hole in his floor following my hole pattern.

I wouldn't mind a 130~amp 3g alt but I don't know if it would cause any overcharging issues or not. my system is pretty simple in terms of what runs off the battery. I haven't had issues with it having a dead battery but running a stock 75amp one seems too small since I have 2 subs and an amp. So far it does ok though.

It won't "overcharge"....

It will provide the necessary voltage and amps that your loads draw. The benefit is that you can add more loads and the alternator will be able to maintain voltage and supply the necessary amps.

Ah ok, well I had a nice post written up and everything but when I hit "post" I got a database error and it erased it . Anyways I thought it would burn up a battery or something. I have a Yellow Top gel cell battery and that sucker wasn't cheap. Since I have upgraded to the Saginaw PS pump, and plan to do a RedHead steering gear when I can. A 3G alt, would compliment them I think.
