I have had to start setting the float about 1/4 to 3/8 inch down from where the shop manual says. The modern gas with alcohol is less dense than 1950s leaded and boils at a lower temperature. That combination leads to the fuel bowl being overfull and gas dripping down inside the carburetor when the engine sits being heat soaked (like when you first shut the engine down). This will cause flooding and hard starting problems when you turn off the engine and want to restart it within about 5 to 30 minutes.

Thanks for the help
I much appreciate all the information that you all have provided.
The carb I am re-working is on a '48 flathead Ford 226, mounted in a Ford 8N Tractor!
The tractor is a rare Funk conversion, one of only 1500 ever made back in the 50s.
Thanks again for you help and will continue to check in with this forum, Charles in MO.
