Starter Ugh. Want my 302 back!
Wow, the learning curves on these are steep! The best way to get to the middle and upper bolt is to jack up the passenger side front and take off the front tire. (Beware, the rim may be corroded onto the rotor, mine was) I ended up taking a long string of extenstions with a swivel on it and snaking it back to the bolts to loosen and tighten them. It took me a long time in the cold to figure this out. Hopefully this will help someone else in the future. You go over the frame, just under the header and onto the top of the starter.
When you take the starter out you will need to disconnect the wires before you pull the starter out of the bellhousing. (You probably wont be able to do this anyway. There is insufficient cable length or room to drop the starter free without disconnecting the wires first.
Does anyone know what the little black plastic tabs that stick out on the bottom of the starter and solenoid are? The look like vent covers, but I broke one of mine on the new starter taking it out of the box, and both of old ones trying to re-use one of them. (Didn't help that is was so darn cold)
Also, going through passenger front wheel well to get to the top bolt, since the motor mount was in the way from direct front, and exhaust manifold and y-pipe is the way from the other. I also used a couple layers of paper towel to help hold the upper bolt in the socket to fish it back into it's hole.
