Talk to me about conversions: 2x4 to 4x4
Okay, I'm halfway through my engine rebuild and I'm thinking what I'd really like is to drop this 460 into a 4x4 instead of the 2x4 from which it came. So I ask you, denizens of the Ford, prestodigitators of the wrench and weld, gurus of the F series, what can an 1988 460 EFI be dropped into? What years and transmissions should I be scouring for as a match to my big block?

Sticking with just this overall generation of trucks anything 80-87 would be carbureted and would simplify things a bit. An 88 tuck with parts from the 4x2 should be a bolt in regardless what came in the 88 4x4. 89-91 might be similar and anything with a 460 should be a bolt-in.
If emissions are a concern you're looking at an F250-HD or F350 but it'll fit into an F150 and Bronco as well. Also the 460 wasn't available till 83 but if emissions are a concern it should be a legal swap as it's a later and presumably cleaner engine.
Transmissions are specific to the 460 as well as the 351M/400 engine. C6 is basic and dependable. The E4OD was available around 89 and up and adds overdrive. 4spds have removable bellhousings and would need a big block bell and the ZF5 is available for the 460 as well.
