OIL IN EXHAUST

Drove my truck about 6 miles this morning. Had it plugged in all night and warmed up for about 10 minutes before taking off. Temp was around 2 degrees last night. When I got where I was going a cloud of smoke followed me and overcame the whole truck once I stopped. (Smelled oily). The truck was blowing alot of smoke on the way back too.

I put it up on the rack this afternoon and I have oil dripping from the exhaust pipes where the sections are clamped and also from the top of the down pipe. The truck seems to run fine. I suppose the turbo is bad...taking in oil from the oil feed?? Not sure if that much oil could be coming from the CCV(I have a CCv filter)??

sounds like it could be a bad turbo oil seal.

I have a turbo in the box P/N 1832255C91 S/N JEM102378
The turbo on the truck is P/N 1854480C91 S/N HKM063855.
Is the new turbo I have a compatible replacement?

From the part number info I have, if you have the 1854480C91 in the truck, then the 1832255C91 should bolt right in (both are for model years after 9/22/03). The pedestal change was made from 9/23/03 on.

Just to confirm, your ICP sensor is on the passenger manifold, correct?

the turbo mounts different on early model (03-early 04) as compared to late model (late 04-07). look at where ICP is. also depends on if you have a factory turbo.

Thanks Bismic, that's what I was hoping to hear . Yes the ICP is on the passenger side. I purchased this turbo on Ebay several years ago as a back up unit. Looks like it's time to use it! Here's what I could find on Garretts website.

So what do you all think? Is there a seal on the lubrication side of the turbo that can leak oil into the exhaust? It definitely seems to be coming from the turbo. Also I understand there are some updated components to be used when changing out a turbo. Can someone list the part#'s if possible. Thank you all so much for the advice

I would look into a voltage fuel supply area problem 1st before making a firm decision to do the turbo. U should have 48 volts I believe. If the voltage swings all over the place ( Lower ) repair the problem 1st. Check UR engine oil for diesel fuel dilution. And CCV can be a big problem. Some route to a catchcan.

carbon mixed with water from a failed egr cooler looks alot like oil, check for coolant loss and coolant leaks before tearing it apart and finding out you may be wrong

Mine did that exact same thing. I lost the oil seal on the exhaust side of the turbo. 125$ and about 3 hours and i was back on the road again. It took a good month to get rid of the burning oil smell. I got the rebuild kit from gpopshop.com. Like cheezit said make sure it aint water. Take the exhaust off the turbo and take a look inside there. Youll know whether its water or oil right away.

How long is the hose to your CCV filter. In cold weather condensation can block the CCV Hose and Back presssure can blow out the seal on the turbo. it does make smoke.
