Transmission Problems?

Transmission Problems?
Has anyone been experiencing any problems with their transmissions on the 2007 models. My wifes seems to slip when we slow to a stop and only stop for a second. When we go to accelerate on the gas the transmission is still in second gear and then it jerks back down to first under heavier acceleration. I would think that the transmission should downshift to first once it is under 5mph but it doesn't appear to be doing so. Does this sound normal or has anyone else experienced the same thing? If so does anyone know if there is a hand-held tuner that could possibly tune/adjust the shift points?
So far we have been enjoying the car and it is a great improvement over her last car, a 2005 Yukon. The ride is much smoother, the interior comfort, lack of wind noise, and fold-flat seats, both second and third are what sold us on this car over the new GM SUV's. I mean who really want's to lug around a 50 pound 3rd row seat and who gives a flip about "The only vehicle in its class to offer Power Fold and Tumble 2nd Row Seating", and I have always been a GM man up until two years ago when I bought a used 02 F-150 4x4 and it wasn't until then when I realized what a great improvement in quality these vehicles have over most of the GM products that I have owned in the past.

Our 07 has the identical problem
We have an 07 Expedition EL EB behaving exactly the same as you describe. It will not downshift to first unless you come to a complete dead stop. I've been told by an F250 owner that that the 250's do the same thing and that's normal for a heavy duty transmission. I'm not so sure, doesn't seem normal to me. Either way, it's very annoying. Otherwise we love it. This is our third Expedition. We haven't taken it to the dealer yet but plan on it. I just hope we don't get the dreaded "normal for this vehicle" or "unable to duplicate problem" run around.

Our 07 Expedition EB EL has the exact same problem. Your description is identical to the way our's is behaving. It will not downshift to first gear unless you come to a 100% dead stop. We get the same "jerk" as you describe if you come to a rolling stop then accellerate. Since the trucks are designed for towing as well as daily driving, your first gear is going to be somewhat low. Therefor the truck will not have a need to really use 1st unless you are towing something heavy in order to get the load moving faster. I have an 84 Bronco II and my truck has to come to a complete stop usually before it will use first gear. Honestly if a vehicle has the capability to tow 9100 pounds the transmission isn't going to shift like a Lexus RX350 which wont tow half that much. So unless the dealer looks at the computer and says theres a problem I would not consider this a problem, just something a heavy duty transmission does.

I like mine!
I was just commenting today how much smoother this 6spd is compared to the old 4spd I had in my 99 Expedition. While I too have experienced the funmbling of a gear upon acceleration from a downshift, I have learned to deal with it and will gladly take the extra MPG's this tranny offers compared to my last Expedition. We are seeing an average of 18.9 MPGs out of a 4X4 non EL. This is 6+MPG's more than our previous 4X4 Expedition.

I agree with you Randy, the 6spd is very smooth, I just don't like the fumbling. One time the transmission got so mixed up I wasn't sure what was happening to it. I just kinda bumped and moved forward. You're lucky at almost 19 mpg! I'm only getting 9.6 in the city and I keep it below 2K rpms most of the time! Could be the 3" lift and big A/T's though

Well maybe this will get everyone to come to a complete stop at a stop sign!
Mine does the same so I just stop.
Just made our 3rd trip, we have over 3100 miles and I still haven't made a payment. Just befor the trip I changed the oil to Mobil 1 5w-20 and we got 19.5 at 75 mph on I95. THe computer shows mid 13s in town.

I just wanted to chime in and say that our new 07 Expedition EL does the exact same thing, but I don't think its a problem mechanically. The transmission is designed to take on a lot more than just the weight of the truck. We also have an '02 F-150 Supercrew with a 4-speed and it does similar things. I noticed if you press down on the gas just lightly for a few seconds to get the gears settled in and THEN give it as much gas as you want, it makes the jerk much less noticable!

this trans has 3 speed sensers. a input speed rpm/ a intermidiate shaft and the tail shaft which checks the drive shaft/road speed. in rpms
if the truck is still rolling it will not fully down shift into first as it is senseing a road speed signal. it will then stay in second gear . if fully stoped it will sense NO road speed and a stop /brake light switch sigal from the abs unit and then down shift into first gear. this is the electronic tranies way of life. it's all interconected now.
as to tuners would say don't! go to firm on the shift as you may cause a snap ring or 2 inside to blow out out of their groves on the clutch packs .this is some thing we see dayly in our shop.

Interesting post. My 2007 XLT with 7500 miles on it exhibits the same behavior. Although today I was making a trip to Buffalo, NY across some hilly terrain with 4 adults in the trucks and the tranny did something that I have never heard before.
I was going up and down hills behind some really odd drivers which created driving conditions of 65mph down hill and 40mph up hill. While I was following the traffic the tranny was switching gears alot trying to find the best one for the conditions. Twice while I was driving the tranny downshifted and forgot which gear it wanted, it sounded like someone grinding a manual transmission, it was loud.
I don't know if I should be concerned but has anyone else had this happen to them?

Ford has had a fix for this problem since mid-Feb.
TSB 07-4-8
Issue: Harsh 1-2 and/or 2-1 shifts, Tip-in hesitation or surge and/or long engagement time.
Action: Reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to the latest calibration.
I had this done to mine in Feb. It was a definate improvement to the shifting, but it still has the hesitation from time to time.
