Old man and free mods.
First off thanks for all the help guys. I have learned a ton of info on this forum in the last 24 hours. Most of you probably have read my first thread on here so lets get into it.fficeffice" /><O></O>
<O</O
I was considering a 60 hp eco/tow flash for my grandfather’s 96. However i know EGT’s may become a issue with mountain driving. Some of you will say just put a pyro gauge in it but that’s just not a option. My grandfather is in his 70s and a gasoline guy. He would probably never even look at it. So with that being said I am looking at options to boost low and mid-range power on a budget. The intake and exhaust sides are done but everything else is stock on the truck. It is also a 4EOD with 4.10 gears.<O</O
<O</O
I have read up on the 14.7K, BB (fuel shim), and IDM Mods all look like good possible options. After reading a few right ups on all the above I think I can tackle them. However I want to make sure I have a good understanding of them first.<O</O
<O</O
The Fuel Shim “BB” mod basically increases the fuel pressure going to the injectors. Your goal is somewhere between 68-72 psi. It seems like this is a good mod for older trucks that may have lower fuel pressure due to wear and tear. <O</O
<O</O
The 14.7k mod tricks the HPOP pump into running more pressure to the injectors. I am assuming this is similar to turning up the rail pressure on a common rail or CP3 system. The increase in pressure allows for better atomization of the fuel creating a cleaner and more complete burn. I am also assuming this will not increase EGT’s and may in fact lower them slightly.<O></O>
<O</O
The IDM Mod basically allows the injectors to respond faster. This helps the truck become more responsive. I also read one thread where it states they also stay open longer. Once again if it helps the truck respond better and does not raise EGT’s I am all for it.<O</O
<O</O
I still have some research to do and will only take on one at a time if I get positive feedback from owners. If any of the above mods make the truck start better, increase its response, run smoother, or add any low-mid range power I will consider it a win. The only catch is I don’t want to trade reliability or higher exhaust temps to do it.<O</O

See that’s the issue. I can run my stock turbo LB7 on a hot tune and watch my pyro all day long. Younger diesel guys can and probably enjoy watching the needle. But it would be a waste of money on his truck. If it was a intercooled truck I would be all for it.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

That’s what I am getting at. He will not watch a pyro gauge so I am afraid that even a tow tune on a long hard pull might get up there. If the truck was intercooled to help keep the EGT’s down a little bit I might feel a little safer about running the DP 60 hp tow tune. And for right around 100 bucks it seems like a great deal.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Honestly, You can go to PepBoys and get a decent EGT and hose fittings for less than $100. Now depending on the store (mine does sell autometer), it might not be the best one. But its still better than not having one at all. Plus the one down the street from me sells 3 pod gauges right off the counter.
My dad was the same way with gauges. But, after being educated on their importance. He went out and bought a set of his own and looks at them religiously. Dont take your grandpa's attention span for granted.
