429 casting info

Looking at a 429 interceptor yesterday. It had 1971 on valve cover but a D2 head stamping is it really a 71 thought those were 72-74. Maybe someone switched the valve cover. But it really looks un touched factory paint and bolts don't have scaring. He wants 350 and guarantees to run has clutch and all just need trans. I plan to put it in a 69 f100. Sound like a good choice to ya'll. getting bored with the 240.

D2 what? a D2VE sucks. so what is the REST of the head casting number. I would be more concerned about that, then what is on the valve covers. Anyone could have put a different sticker or different valve covers on but it's pretty darn hard to fake casting numbers

As long as it's not D2VE your good.

I don't beleive you should find one in a 71 so probably a switched valve cover.

You cannot go by ID numbers marked on valve covers to ID engine sizes/years. 1968/73 429 & 1968/77 460's used the same covers. Plus, FoMoCo is in-famous for replacing 10's of 1000's of part numbers EVERY YEAR!

Replaced the 1968/77 right side V/C part number in 1978, replaced the 1968/77 left side V/C part number in 1979. So who knows what valve cover could be present?

No 429's after 1973. Installed in 1968/71 Thunderbird's & 1969/73 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars.

Are you sure it's a 429? 429's share the same block with 460's, the bore (4.36") is the same, the stroke is different: 429 = 3.59" / 460 = 3.85."

Block casting number: D1VE-6015-AB ~ Same: 1971/73 429, 1971/78 460 and some 1979 460's installed in F150/350's and Econolines.

460's not available in cars after 1978 / And D2VE heads were used on both 429's and 460's. Engine rebuilders would install any 'ol heads they had, so you might find D2VE heads on say, a 1969 Lincoln Mark III w/a 460.

And btw: Don't get all excited about the "Interceptor" engine, cuz it's not a hipo. Ford used the term interceptor for both the 429 2V and 4V in 1970/71, and the 1970/71 390 2V was also an interceptor, not a hipo either.

Now, if it's a 429 POLICE interceptor, that's a different story.

The heads are what primarily makes it a police interceptor. post the head casting numbers.

Ok I have a bunch of numbers for yall. Here's a list of numbers may be missing a digit or 2 on end on 1 or 2
D2ve- b-a water pump or timing cover front of engine
D3ve-a1 intake manifold
Valve cover 71
D3ve-a2a heads
3Y927115 number on engine block
Can't find engine casting numbers only the above.

Either way guy gurantees it 3 months. He said it ran smooth before he pulled it. He got it out of a 71 f100 but obviously it came from something else. What do you guys think. The d2ve water pump got me a bit worried. Heck is it even a 429 maybe 460. Just a bit confused now. I plan to purchase the motor for 350 Friday. Unless I hear I shouldn't.

The D2VE water pump is no biggie either way.

BUT with D3VE heads it's at least a 73 or later so the valve covers have been put on it. Someone might have gotten a set of 71 valve covers to match the truck adn make it look like it was original for whatever reason.

Look above the starter and you will find a casting number. If it's D1VE- then it's a 73 thru mid year 79, if it's a D9TE-AB it's a late year 79 thru sometime in the 80s most likely a 460 (79 and later 429 would have different timing cover and huge dampener)

Whatever the case it is NOT a police interceptor in any way shape or form, just a standard passenger car most likely 460.

Yeah I'm getting the feeling it's a 460 ill check Tom above starter. Nothing special really but I guess anythings better then the current situation. I didn't really want a 460 kinda just like the idea of a 429 better. Thanks for info

So if it says D1VE- on block above starter then it was a 429 built block and not 460 built block. Confused a little.

429 and 460 use teh same block.

It's a 73-early 79 engine. Probably a 460 but you would need crank cast numbers or measure the stroke. Slightly over 3.5" stroke is a 429, 3.85" is a 460.

See if you the guy will let you pull the oil pan off and check the crankshaft, if it is a 429 ther will be a 4U stamped on one of the counter weights, if its stamped 2YA or anything else it is a 460
