Which would you pick? 6.4L or 6.7L

If you were looking for a used truck to replace your 7.3L, which would you pick the 6.4 or 6.7L?

I've heard the 6.4 has some good potential being factory compound turboed, but is also plagued with some of the 6.0 problems.

The Scorpion 6.7 sounds like it runs hard, but you have to run DEF (minor item) and is a bit more money...

They both have the same issues: DPF, EGR & HPFP

I you want to modify the truck and delete those items then get the 6.4 since you can also solve the other major issue with that engine (fuel economy). The potential for major HP gains is quite impressive with this engine.

If you plan on keeping the emissions equipment and want some warranty support then get the 6.7. Be advised the PCM in a 6.7 now writes a record to the memory whenever the calibration is changed so installing any programmer will likely void your power train warranty. There have been several FTE members who have experienced that issue already. The 6.7 also has the SCR system which adds yet another complex system with the potential for problems. A fault in the DEF system usually results in a tow.

If you are looking for an F-450 pickup, then the 6.4 chassis is far more capable than the 6.7 version.

I really don't need alot more power. I don't know if I even need HO injectors in mine, yet. But I would really like a 5 or 6 speed trans. I did a wide ratio transmission in my dirtbike (lower in first & higher in fifth overall) for riding mountain trails. I'm a firm believer in how the power is put to the ground. The in-between gear shifts and big drop in R's on lockup really drives me nuts going up the mountain.

A F-250 is plenty for me, but a F-350 would work too. My brothers rides about the same as mine. I've even been tempted to drop down to a Ecoboost F-150. The heaviest I pull is about 6-7000 lbs.

The EcoBoost is impressive, but after driving it around for a day or two I am real glad to climb back into my Super Duty trucks. I just prefer the larger more capable trucks. If Ford were ever to come up with a 5.0 EcoBoost for the Super Duty line then I'd be very interested...

Isn't the 6.4 nearly impossible to work on? I've heard that the cab has to be pulled or the engine pulled for a lot of the work...

I don't imagine any of them are easy to work on anymore. What is Ford thinking....It just costs them more for warranty repairs!

I do not mean to rain on the parade here, but someone will have to pry my 7.3 out from under my cold dead foot, so to speak. It may not be the most fuel efficient of the diesels out there but it seems to work pretty well, at least for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 7.3L PSD. If I could have a new 5 or 6 speed auto under my 7.3, I'd retrofit it!! But its not a option I've found. A few years ago I thought hard about putting a ZF5 or ZF6 under it, but I like the luxury of the auto even if its not perfect. Plus I just like some of the new modern features that vehicles are coming with nowdays....Navigation, Sync, Digital Dashes, Bluetooth, etc.

after driving a low mileage 6.4 powered F-450 and the 2011 F-550 with the 6.7, i will take a 6.7 without even thinking about it. much better engine.

All of that stuff is just a head unit swap away.

Oh, Gotcha. Yeah I've already got a double din Kenwood installed in my sig. It's been in there for several years so it doesn't have all the latest and greatest features. Minor item compared to the trans stuff...

I love my 6.4, DPF delete & Spartan 275 tune... 4X4 CCSB with an auto & it'll go sideways til you let out of the throttle.... Gets About 16-17 mpg on the highway.
