Unhappy VSS Sensor wiring problem

Hi, I'm working on a 2005 Ford E 150 Van with 4.6 and 4R70W trans. Problem was no speedo and trans shift problem so we thought it was vss sensor and replaced both (one on trans and one on rear end) still didnt work. The ecu shows no vss signal but no check engine light or code set. So I traced out the vss sensor wiring from the trans and found my gray with red stripe wire #12 dead ends at the connector at bell housing (other half of connector has no pin in it) this is one single gray with red wire from vss to connector. Doesn't a vss sensor need both the blue with yellow and the gray with red to work? Please someone help with some info.
