It's actually used to help maintain the proper oil temp in all climates; it keeps it from getting too hot and also too cool. However, a very small handful of these units have been known to leak coolant into the oil system which isn't good.

I would think as long as your cooling system is able to keep the motor from overheating in extreme conditions, then there shouldn't really be a need to run an additional oil cooler.
