This sounds like the answer to my problem! It looks to be 1 1/4"+- too short for my bell housing. Do you have a picture if the bushing?

The bushing was too long and holding the transmission back (which I expected) so I took a disk sander and slowly sanded the end off the bushing until the transmission fit. This way the bushing was exactly the length I needed. Kind of crude, but very effective. I cleaned the area carefully, greased the bushing, and bolted everything together.

The only other thing worth mentioning is I had to add a bend to the 1st / rev shift rod when I installed the T-85. The shift arm spacing on the non-overdrive 3.03 transmission is wider than the T-85. This is probably not a problem for your installation. In case it is, here is a picture of the T-85 after I installed it in the '66:

I haven't done anything with mine yet, I want to keep my 56 bell housing with the rear motor mounts. if you search "T85 Overdrive" there is a posting from a guy in who had a machine shop turn down the input end, and have an extensions made up. I have to "dry fit" mine with an extra engine I have laying around. I like the thick bushing idea if it will work.

The extra length pilot bushing sounds like a great idea. The early bell housings has a different fork and throw out bearing ID. Will the front bearing retainer from an early truck trans fit on the later model car or truck trans?

I do not have a picture of the bushing. I took the new one from my clutch kit and measured it for ID and OD. If you don't have good quality machinist measuring tools you can take the bushing from your clutch kit to the machinist making the new bushing for reference.

I was working at a machine shop when I put that truck together, but didn't have any bronze stock. It would have cost more to buy a piece of bronze stock that it cost to have the bushing made. Go figure.

That's what I thought. Was curious what it turned out to look like. Thanks for the info! Glad I'll be able to use the trans!

Well, my t86 is toast... Pulled it out today and found many teeth in the trans case. YEEHAW! Now I gotta get serious about the t85 installation. Does any one know how long the input shaft is from the F100 and the car unit? The longer pilot bushing sounds like the ticket, but I want to be sure it will work on my 223.

I just came in from working in the garage, as soon as I catch my breathe I'll go out and measure the two for you.

223 and the V8's all use the same dimensions as far as bolt patterns, depth and diameters.

There is where the problem lies when mixing apples and oranges. The collar/bearing retainer for the throw out bearing on the trucks is different then the cars.

The T85 is 1 1/8" diameter X 6 3/8" long, the stock trans from my truck is 1 3/8" dia. X 7" long. Not much to make up! I think the longer bushing will work, but I think the larger diameter shaft would be better...if such a beast exists!

I don't think they exist. As far as I know they never used a T85 in the earlier trucks.

I think you're right! But won't hurt to ask around here. I'm hoping this will work. My T86 ate itself pretty good. I can still salvage some good parts off it though.

Just curious but what was the T86 out of? And do you know why it ate itself?

Not sure...it has a truck type of input shaft and a long, car type of tail shaft. Why did it eat itself? ....it's old?
