Want to Remove Steering column for painting
We just completed painting our '62 project, and want to remove the column for shifter repair and painting. There's not a lot of info about doing this. The question is, can we remove the column without removing the steering box? And is removing the box more difficult than painting the column is worth? thanks.

Disconnect your turn signal wiring harness under the dash, unbolt the end of the column from the flex disc tying the steering to the steering gear box, unbolt the support plate and collar from the firewall. Then unbolt the column from under the dash and it should come right out.
I forgot to ask, is this an automatic or manual? If it's a manual with column shift, disconnect you shift linkages as the next to last step before unbolting the column from under the dash.

All 61 to 64 trucks and 65 F100, 65 66 F250 four wheel drives all have integral shaft boxes.

You need to remove the steering wheel with a puller, then pull the ts wire bullet connectors.
Once the wheel is off you can slip the steering column up the shaft a bit. Remove the upper head screws and separate the upper section from the column. At this time also slip the TS wires up and through the guide.
The bare column will then slip all the way up off the shaft. Place some protection near the back of the fresh paint on the cab.
Now is also a good time to replace the TS switch.
Reassemble the same way.
You can also pull the wheel and remove the three bolts holding the steering box on and let it fall slightly and take it out the rear window seeing as you have it out.

This is for a 2 wheel drive. Based on the pictures you posted.
The four wheel drive is similar with the exception of the 66 F100 4x4. it shares the new type column.
