Mine is just fab! Replaced any hydraullic parts....clutch fork....dmf....i can go on forever...driving my auto...while sipping a soda...or eating a burger...or both while still driving hahaha lol

It sounds like something rotating and the faster the vehicle speed the faster it whines. Drove it about 150 miles today and it seemed to shift fine but it takes a little more brake to stop in reverse.

Richard, I don’t make it very far south often. Sacramento is about 5 hours from me. I might be able to make a trip down there though when it’s out.
I intended on replacing it with a zf5 when I bought the truck. I would have preferred to buy a manual, but I needed a truck then and I didn’t like any of the 3 manuals listed on the pacific coast

ha! i was just eating my Wendy's burger from the drive-through the other day thinking 'this'll be much tougher and i'll get alot more ketchup on my lap once i have my manual trans in here.'

but then i also thought, 'its OK, i'll be that much cooler with my manual trans, that i won't care if i get out of the truck covered in condiments and burger grease.'

...figured i'd join in the man vs. auto trash-talking. ...notice my abbreviation for manual? man? get it? get it? :-)

Haha. I wish. Havent even begun collecting the parts. I did find a zf6 with 99k miles on it a few hours away that has me interested. Not sure I want to go through the added work just for a cool shift pattern though...

I've searched craigslist from seattle wa to Santa Barbara Ca and there is a definite lack of parts trucks. I'm thinking about just buying a trans and scalping what parts I can off of an F150. After the new year though Im going to head down to Sacramento and check out some of the big junk yards there.

i had a similar experience locating one as well. couldnt find a good parts truck anyone on the east coast. i was all set to drive 8 hrs down to WV to buy a trans and some parts off of a guy on here (ReBilld), but then found a trans and driveshaftes only 2 hours away in PA. took a lot of searching though. the one i bought supposedly has only 110k miles on it, but it was out of the truck already, so who knows. also, when i got there, the driveshafts he had to go with the trans were wrong. held them up under my truck and the rear was shorter instead of longer than my current. i did get a spare turbo for the price i was going to pay for the driveshafts, though.

main bearings felt solid and it shifted into all gears OK by hand, but it was cold and snowing out that day, so it was just a quick look and into the truck and i was gone. we'll see how it looks once i give it a closer inspection and fill it with fluid to check for leaks. then, obviously how it drives is the biggest test. still more parts gathering to do before then, though. i'm not planning to do any work to it unless it leaks like a sieve or is total junk once it goes in the truck. ...fingers crossed...

these zf's are supposed to be bullet-proof, right?

Yes, but not literally. I remember reading a post on one of these forums, where a loaded revolver under a fella's seat somehow discharged, and the bullet went right through the floor and yes, through the tranny case....

The major threat to the ZF is from the OEM dumb-mass... er... dual-mass flywheel, and the risk of it grenading the case when those zillions of little spring and weight bits fly loose. Not an issue with a transplant, of course.

I found this which has sparked my interest:
1999 F350 lifted power stroke 6 speed parting out

What would I be able to use from that pickup?
I've read that you have to body lift the truck for the zf6 to fit. Supposedly a friend of a friend here in town has put a zf6 in his 97 and my friend doesn't think he body lifted it. Is it necessary?

I've read the same thing Bill, but not real reasons were given. I'm wondering if I can get a zf6 for about the same cost if it would be worth it? I realize there's not much gain with the 6 speed, but if it's basically the same process I dont see why not go for it.

Well I've found a viable option. There's a guy within driving distance who's doing the opposite swap. He put the zf5 in it 6200 miles ago because his e40d was acting up but decided he didnt like the 1st-2nd gear lurch he was getting, so he sent his e40d out for bulletproofing.

I had my buddy up there go drive the truck today and he says it shifts sweet. I'm going to give him a ring tomorrow and see if we can work something out...

So, new question: I think he would be giving me a pcm. If so does it need to be a cali pcm to work with my truck? (My truck is a cali model)
