Cracked flexplate = Good luck/Bad luck...

Well, we (THANK YOU DWAYNE - 1fititman!!!) were just about to drop the engine in the Excursion late this afternoon when we noticed the flexplate was cracked...........

Good luck that it didn't fail when I was driving the X - Bad luck that I didn't notice in February (when the engine came out) that it was broken. Also bad luck that I don't have money to fix it right now. I've asked my pimp for a loan and a raise, but not sure she's gonna give me more than (another) fat lip.

Pics of the carnage for your sadistic viewing pleasure:

It was cracked all the way around. All it took was 2 little tapps from a hammer and the center fell out!

I'm picking up a 99 7.3 engine either monday or tuesday and I might be able to help you out depending on what they charge for shipping a flexplate.

SkySkiJason, what were the symptoms of your cracked flex plate? By any chance was there a vibration between 1500-2000 rpm that varied with load?

Thanks guys! Joey is gonna get a close look at his tomorow and if its OK he can nearly throw it over the mountain to me - so it should be here in just a day or 2.

If it has any cracks or signs of fatigue, Frank's does look like its pretty new - so it would be GREAT.

I'll let y'all know what we find out!!!

Btw, its 1fixitman... Maybe I do need glasses - it looked good when I was typing it the first time!

He should be home in an hour or so and since he hasn't been on the forum all weekend, I expect he'll at least get a quick fix tonite. I'll get some pics posted, but he did a BEAUTIFUL job cleaning up my engine wire harness and getting rid of all the superfluous wires (AIH, WG, EBPV). It looks really, really good. Thanks again for all your help - including the work we did on my new burning barrel!!

There was no indication whatsoever and this one did have more than 270k miles on it. I pulled the engine due to a cracked piston and only discovered the flexplate was cracked while inspecting it before we installed it on the new engine. Seems like this is a pretty common failure mode...

Thanks Jason. My truck has the vibration I described, and it kinda reminds me of how my old 86 GMC van used to feel before a flexplate failure. That truck went through 4 or 5 of them . I'm planning on pulling the cover for a look at the flexplate and TC this weekend.

That barrel is certifiably ready to burn anything once the lid gets cut off. Home safe. Going to bed.

when mine went I didn't really get any vibrations, just a loud metal to metal sound that varied with load. The center section was completely separated when it came out.
