Sounds like the Ignition Control Module (ICM) was grounding the coil all the time (bad ICM). With the key on a loading (non LED) test light should light at both of the small wires at the Ignition Coil. If it does not either the coil is open or the ICM is bad and grounding the wire to the Ignition coil or the wire is shorted to ground.
