The threads would still be on the bottom just behind the lip on the bottom instead of top

If you flip it and put the rectangular u-bolt upside down and behind the receiver's lip, then position the partially round clamping bar and bolt ends on top of the 2" hitch post, the bolt threads and nuts will be completely out of the way of the bumper (see pic below). Looks like a decent concept to me, and then you're hitch load will not be resting on the u-bolt threads but on the hitch structure where it should be.

Ahh, Gotcha!!

I think I'm going to get a couple and try them-I think I'll eliminate the double nut arrangement and get stop nuts too!

This would help a lot with the bike rack on the fiver too... Actually, I think I'm ordering one as a Christmas gift for my camping partner. Following him is scary with his bikes bouncing around. It does look like it should go the other way though.

You can drill a couple holes in the receiver and tap them for bolts. The receiver is thick enough for threads. I did this on my front hitch to stabilize my home made top side creeper that slides into my front hitch, just two short 3/8" bolts, one on the bottom and one on the side works great and only takes a couple seconds with a crescent.
