Factory 4X4?

I tried a search and did not come up with much. I am trying to find out if all factory 4X4 vin #s start with F26 for a 250? More specifically a 1960. Where these all factory 4x4s? or were they still sent to Marmon Herrington?

I am looking at a 1960 4x4 and am being told it is factory but the vin # starts with F25.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

well im not 100 percent on this but i think the f11 anf f26 vin numbers were for the later trucks. the vin on the 57-60 trucks start with f10 or f25 and the only way to tell a factory is by the front axle code.

1959 f100 Here is a picture of my data tag from the glovebox! Serial number shows F25---- then below that After color and before date code it shows F28C i'm not sure wate the C after F28 means, and of course the front axle code is there on the end of the middle line.
Clear as mud right?

Under the axel code section of this tag it reads "04 B". The "04", is the rear axel ratio which would be 4.56-5M ratio, according to the '60 shop manual and the "B", is for the front axel 4.55 ratio (4-wheel drive). So yes, the plate indicates 4- wheel drive! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

This is a 1959 F250 with factory installed 4WD. According to the 1957/63 Ford Truck Parts Catalog, both F10/F11 .. F25/F26 Series codes were used in 1959/60.

The MODEL code defined whether the truck was 2WD or 4WD / 1959 had the code, but the term MODEL itself wasn't listed on Rating/Warranty Plates until 1960.

F25 = F250.

C = 292 2V

9 = 1959.

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.

38460 = 1959 Numerical Sequence of Assembly, the trucks specific serial number.

118" Wheelbase.

C = Wedgewood Blue.

Model: F28C = F250 4WD Cab & Chassis / 7,400 lbs. GVWR

01F: Assembled June 1, 1959.

A = Ford 3 Speed Manual Transmission.

04B: 04 = Dana 60 Rear Axle / 4.56-1 / non Limited Slip / 5,000 lb. Rear Axle Capacity // B = Dana 44 Front Driving Axle / 4.55-1 / 3,000 lb. Front Axle Capacity.

7,400 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

158 net HP @ 4,000 RPM

8130 = Domestic Special Order Number. The truck was special ordered by the original purchaser, not "bought off the lot."

Domestic Special Order means that special equipment was installed that was not an RPO (Regular Productrion Order). After the truck left the assembly line, FoMoCo sent the truck out to have the equipment installed.

The DSO number was important because if parts were required for the special equipment, the dealer would contact FoMoCo, pass along this number.

FoMoCo would look up the order, then tell the dealer where to get the parts. This same system is used today.

LMC's (and FTE's) VIN decoders aren't worth TWO CENTS, have multiple errors and omissions.

Parts catalog lists these series codes for 1959/60, but does not specifically state they refer to 4WD's.

1959/60: It's the MODEL code that defines whether the truck is 2WD or 4WD.

And, FoMoCo did not always list front driving axle codes within the AXLE code for 4WD's...especially after 1966.
