Cat removal?

Thinking of cutting the cat off in my truck and replace it with a pipe. What are the positives and negatives of doing this? I currently have a 12 inch glasspack on it and the cat really absorbs alot of the noise

If you get smog checks, leave it on. If it's plugged and malfunctioning, cut it out and put a high flow catalytic converter in. Johnny Law won't have reason to come for ya if you have emissions equipment.
However..the stock catalytic converter is very restrictive, and really is muffling all of the noise. If you only have a glasspack on your truck, especially a short one like that, it's going to sound awful and YOU are going to hate it. I ran my truck with a short glasspack for one day while i was waiting for my buddy to bring me my welder back, and I couldn't turn up my stereo loud enough to drown out the god awful cracking. If you DO cut off your cat, buy a flowmaster 50 series muffler. They sound really good, don't crackle and pop, are quiet in town, and if you stomp on it itll gain some volume.
But like I said, the downside is that it gives them reason to ticket you.

in my area it doesn't matter about cats. I have it off on my 88 F150 and our 84 Bronco 2. But yes it does have a crackling noise.

I want a Loud powerful sound to it, but not a crappy loud sound, id like a very defined loud sound.

If you just put that short glasspack on, in my opinion, it's not going to sound very good. If you want it to be loud and still sound good, a flowmaster super 44, or 40 series are both pretty loud, but they don't sound bad. If you think about going with the 40 series, Summit sells a street and strip muffler that is identical to it for about half the price. That's what I'm currently running on my truck and it sounds pretty good. I don't have cats on it either though.
