New member A Few questions
Hi all great site! but I have read so much my eyes hurt and I can find what I'm looking for. Any help or input would be appreciated. I have 99 F250 V10 crew cab. Can anyone explain the 4x4 system. I have a dash switch with 2WD 4hi 4low. The front hubs say Auto/Lock. I was told that switching into 4Hi in the cab power WILL go to the front wheels without locking out the hubs. I was also told just the opposite, that I would have to exit and lock the hubs to fully engage the front wheels. Just for laughs, I switched to 4Hi on a dry road and did hear a "thud" up front, but when I turned the wheels either way I didnt feel anything different. Who is telling me the truth?
#2 I can hear an exhaust up front and upon inspection I noticed a few bolts have broken inside the exhaust manifold. It really sounds bad until the engine warms up a bit, but I wonder if I'm losing anything as far is power goes and is this a big job fix?
#3 I have and can feel a "thud" under my feet. Nothing appears to be loose or out of place.
#4 It seems that I am going through front rotors every year. From slowing down at high speeds I get vibrations so bad I feel the truck will crumble to pieces. Does anyone know of aftermarket rotors that would give me more time.
Thats it, I love my Ford truck! the interior is showroom and aside from a little exterior rust here and there, I plan on keeping her until they bury me. Thanks for any suggestions. Mike

#2 I am not an expert but from what I know if you have a few bolts broken there is most likely a leak and yes that will definitely rob you of some HP
#3 This sounds like it could be a transmission or a motor mount that is loose
#4 I had a 07 F150 and had this exact same issue, I fixed it by putting on new calipers. it would turn out that they were partly seized. be careful though bleed the brakes properly it you don't you might end of blowing out the rear brake line.
Hope this helps.

Welcome to FTE.
1. If your dash switch (ESOF) is moved to 4x4 the hubs will automatically engage when set to auto. When set to manual they stay engaged. If there is an issue with not having 4x4 it may be a vacuum leak as the ESOF is a vacuum type system. Leaving the hubs in manual wont hurt anything but gas mileage and can wear the parts quicker.
2. The broken exhaust studs are common. Most swap out the headers while they're replacing the studs with bolts. It is a PITA but doable. There was just a good write up on doing the deed. A welder or buddy with one will come in handy as some may break off right at the block.
3. No clue and it can be a number of things.
4. No recomendations on brake rotors either. When in doubt I stick with stock parts.
Practice with the search feature of the forum. Use the advanced option and you can be a little more selective on the results the search will provide. Almost any issue that can come up has been talked through in one manner or another. If not there are always smart folks on here to lend a hand.

Very common problem with the V10 check in the Modular V10 part of the forum they can tell you more or even show you a link to how to fix this our 02 F250 V10 hasn't came to this problem.
#3 I have and can feel a "thud" under my feet. Nothing appears to be loose or out of place.
Is this when shifting gears or what we need a little more information on when you feel this and all that a thud under your feet can be multiple things.

I am not sure why you would be going through rotors that fast but my buddy with his 91 F350 4x4 460 crew cab does the same we have Bosch or something like that brakes top of the line according to the previous owner.

If you are going to do a front end upgrade, I would recommend doing this

That is for an 06 Fseries they have coil front suspension. All 05-now superduties had coil front suspension. All 99-04 Fseries have front leaf springs completely diffrent so that will not work for him as the Original poster (mike) has a 99.
