exhaust manifold problem

Well, I am new to the forum but have made use of advice I have found on the page. I have recently noticed (last 30 days) a clicking noise coming from the exhaust manifold area when I accelerate. When idle or level rpm the sound is slight at best. I think I have a leak on the right side and was wondering the cost that I should expect on this? Any advice for a newbe!

Welcome to FTE. Sounds like you either have a bad gasket, or a cracked manifold. You might want to get a few feet of tubing and use it like a stethoscope. Listen around the flange area, as well as down the tubes. That will tell you whether its the gasket or the manifold itself. What kind of vehicle is this? Have you thought about swapping out the stock manifolds for some headers? Ill wait to see what kind of vehicle you have before I go on.

exhaust manifold problem

Thanks for the response, it is a 98 f150 triton v8 4.6L. I bought the truck used from the dealer and have not had a problem with it. I will try the tubing advice to see if I cant locate the leak( i hope) and wait to see what other advice you might have. It is ever so slight but I have noticed it and now thats all I hear

What can I expect to pay if it is the gasket? I am expecting that there are 4 bolts on the manifold, I can only see 2 and I really rather not do this one myself. I rebuilt my outboard engine two years ago but I dont want to tackle this problem by myself!

Thanks for the tip!!!

I know that there are 4 bolts along the bottom of the manifold under the ports, there are probably 4 across the top too.

exhaust manifold problem

well after looking at some of the other postings I decided to run some cleaner through it hoping that it just some carb build up, to my suprise I can not detect the sound again.... if that did correct the problem I am relieved but find it hard to believe that this corrected the problem. Should I take the truck in and have it looked at?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! Just add injector cleaner at every oil change.

I had the exact same problem. Took the truck to my exhaust shop and was told there were no leaks. Ran a bottle of cd-2 thru it and it appears the light ticking from the right side near the exhaust manifold is gone. What type of cleaner did you use? I guess it was just a sticky lash adjuster...
