Aluminum case, but when i lost a cap on the u-joint in my ranger it broke the tail shaft housing before i could get pulled over.

Thanks rempel, you nailed it. It was the drive shaft, it was pretty bent (unusable) and the splines were not quite lined up. I really appreciate the help guys.
