I'm new here, signed up today.
I friend and I have just bought a F 500 4x4 M&H 1959 with a german signal hut from The Norwegian Army. Tot grossweights is 17000 lbs. = 7,711 kgs. In Norway we some strange rules about weight and driver licence.
My questions is: has there been produced a F 500 with a tot gross weight less than 16,534 lbs = 7,500 kgs.
Because we have a driver licens limit at 7,500 kgs. Next step is over 7,500 kgs, which we don't have and it expencive to get.

First, welcome to the forum. Glad to have you, and glad to see a Marmon-Herrington being saved. The standard F-500 maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVW) was 15,000 pounds in 1959. The 17,000 pound rating was assigned to the F-600 classification. Marmon-Herrington, however, made it their practice to upgrade their conversions to have greater weight capacity. Thus an F-500 came to be rated the same as an F-600. Hopefully that helps you with your licensing authority. Stu

 

wecome to fte bernhard. that sounds like a beast of a truck you have. marmon herrington converted your truck to awd/4wd as ford only did f100's and f250's back in 1959. as far as the gross weight goes, that would depend on what kind of gear the truck is outfitted with. sounds like yours has the german signal hut on it. if i needed to get it under 7500 kgs i would start taking some stuff off of it. it must be a big jump in license fees or why mess with? again, welcome to fte.
now that i read Stus post i clearly have the wrong idea of the question......................its early and im not that bright!

 

Mark - would it not be that the GVWR would be a combination of the curb weight of the truck plus the truck's load capacity to achieve that 17,000 pound figure? As I'm seeing it, removing equipment from the truck, i.e. reducing curb weight, would only result in a net increase in the load capacity. Thus no change in the 17,000 pound GVWR. Stu

 

i think your right Stu. they must license by gvwr and i was thinking gross weight. if thats the case, he needs to find a tag from a 59 f500 with the lower gvwr and rivit it on before he takes it in for tags. or pay the higher price. if they license by actual weight, that would be easy, just start taking stuff off the truck. does it seem odd to you that its a ford truck with the mh conversion that has a german signal hut on it and it was used in the norwegian army? there is alot going on there!
