starter time delay when key turned???

2000 f150 4x4 5.4auto tranny.

When I turn the key, sometimes i have a time delay before the starter kicks in. I replaced the relay on the firewall and no change. A couple of days ago I started the truck but the starter did not turn off when the key was released. I had to turn the key to off then back to run to get the starter to stop. Now today, I nearly got stranded by it. It took several attempts to get the starter to kick in.

To me this seems like a relay sticking. What should I try next?

Sounds like a solonoid sticking... these trucks have 2 solonoids.. 1 on the firewall and another obe on the starter itself... i believe they have rebuild kits for them... but personally i just replace the whole starter.. hopefully this is of some help and maybe someone else will chime in with any more ideas

Forgot to mention that today when it wouldn't do anything, I didn't notice any relay"clicks".

There is only ONE solenoid in the system and it's on the starter. It's probably sticking and is the likely problem.

There are ways to diagnose it but you will need a meter or test lamp.

The starter was replaced 2 years ago, but it has a lifetime warranty so I swapped it out. Ill see if that make a difference.

I had this exact problem with my 99 lariat, it was the solenoid under the hood on the driver side against the top of the firewall

it would do this sometimes and sometimes not, I tested it and replaced it and it fixed it

might be that or the one on the starter it self if you have the gear reduction type which most people do

but there are 2 solenoids on my truck

That part is a relay, not a solenoid. As I previously stated, the only solenoid is on the starter motor.

If you do not know the difference between a solenoid and a relay, please look it up.

Well I swappd out the starter about a week ago, even though I replaced it 2 years ago. I think that was the problem.
