Yeah, I agree with everything Mark says about Ford automatic transmissions, lol. I believe that MERCON V superseded MERCON as the recommended fluid for the E4OD. I imagine that anything that meets the old MERCON specs would work, too, though. After all, that was the recommended fluid at the time of manufacture.
When did that change? Used to be Ford advised not to put v in place of 3.said it would dissolve the glue in the clutches.I am not dissagreeing just curious and perplexed.
First, there never was a MERCON 3. There was MERCON and MERCON V. MERCON was the fluid used when the E4OD was manufactured.
Ford NEVER advised that MERCON V would dissolve the glue in the clutches. Some dealer might have told you that, but a dealer is not Ford. The original MERCON V did cause problems in the E4OD, but it did not dissolve the glue in the clutches.
In 2006 Ford discontinued MERCON and reformulated MERCON V to make it compatible with older transmissions that used MERCON. MERCON V is now the right fluid for the E4OD.
Cool.i will let u know i worked as a line rech at ford for 8 years. That is what we were told.i now know better.thanks, i am going to service my trans soon so i will use v on it. See.you learn something every day.even when you are off for holiday.thanks mark!

I figured that he meant DexIII. The typical, generic "Automatic Transmission Fluid" you see meets DexronIII and MERCON. See below, but pretty much every manufacturer makes it, not just Castrol:
