V10 to V8 Swap

V10 to V8 Swap
My nephew has an '03 Excursion with a V10. It has 250,000 miles, and it looks like it spun a rod bearing. He has been quoted $6000.00 for a Jasper V10 installed. I am trying to give him some alternatives. His trans is OK, but also has 250,000 miles, so you can add another $3000.00 to that total.
My question is?
What are the compatibilty issues between a late model 5.4L V8 and a V10?
Can he take a low mileage V8 from a late model wreck and swap it for the V10? He could try to get the trans along with the motor.
Another question is:
Does the V10 have a steel crank or is it cast?

In a perfect world yes. Do a search there is many threads about it, you will need to swap entire wiring harness', and the PCM. You will need a complete running donor truck. I know it will bolt in but there is more to it. Have you looked for a used V10 ? Have you talked to a ford dealer? IMHO I would go with a ford motor. Better warranty and you know it's done correctly.

I posted a thread on this a few weeks back and I got plenty of information on this, I won't say I am an expert, but I will answer some of your questions for certain.
1- The V8 will go right in where the V10 was.
2- It will pay for you to do the job and you will save money.
3- In order for the above to be true you will need to get the V8 for roughly about free.
You will also need not only the motor but also,
1- The complete engine wiring harness.
2- The ECM from the donor truck.
3- Almost all the bolt ons from the donor truck (under the hood).
4- You will need to change just about everything in the engine compartment.
5- You will need to change the exhaust system, the exhaust manifolds, etc.
I very nearly did in fact do this engine swap on my V10, against all the recommendations of everyone here on the forum, I did indeed almost do it. For me the main reason I was going to do it was indeed because I had a low mileage donor vehicle, and I had the whole vehicle, and it was just about free for the taking.
As it turned out Hurricane Sandy intervened on my behalf and as we were finalizing the decision she dropped a tree on a V10 in NJ killing the truck, but leaving the engine and drivetrain in good working order, so we had a donor for a reasonable price, and we never looked back. I will tell you I don't regret it.
I have a v10 out now that has a spun bearing, and sounds like you are in the same place I was in. My advice to you is keep looking, and wait till you find the right deal for an engine or have yours rebuilt. I now have a bad one pulled out of my old truck and I am debating whether to sell it as is or have it rebuilt and sell it or keep it.
Good luck deciding!

the 3V is "drive by wire". That would require finding a complete running truck. A 3v swap would be very hard and very expensive. Try carpart.com and you should be able to find a good deal on a used lower mileage V10. I wouldn't cross the bridge to the transmission until it gets to that point. If you swap to a V8 or find a V10 make sure you replace the exhaust manifold studs while the motor is out, its much easier!

You can go up to the '04 on the trucks with the V10.
