Lightbulb 78 F250 4X4

hey, attempting to put a 69 Lincoln 460 engine in a 78 4X4 F250. have it in on engine mounts and transmission but, P/S exauhst is hanging over frame by 1/2". can I trim the frame without weakening it & do I weld a support piece in. would appreciate any help from guy's who have done this swap.

It'll need at least another 1/4-inch clearance to allow for engine movement/vibration. Trim/grind it with a smooth arc, not a square notch which will introduce a stress point (corners) and begin to crack.

Personally however, I prefer to modify the exhaust before altering the frame.

I was under the impression that Lincoln 460s were slightly different than truck 460s... something about two versus three motor mount bolt holes?

do not i repeat do not cut the frame. find a set of truck manfiolds for your motor. i have personally seen trucks with the frame cut and a arc cut in it not matter how it will crack and then its scrap. if the truck ever has to go be inspected it will not pass with the frame welded like that. truck manfiolds are cheap and easy to find.

thanks for the help. I drilled a hole up 3/4" on a 390 motor mount. couldnt equal it between top & bottom because of the exauhst manifold. I seen 3 bolt holes on each side, maybe placed different, I should of checked other 460's I have waiting for other projects. The power steering runs off the damper pulley on this 460, might be tricky. Thanks, Mike.

I'll respectfully disagree... clearancing is different than cutting.

I am not a fan of a frame clearance or cut in that torque receiving area, but the PO of ol blue was. Just get a TRUCK r/h, exhaust manifold and you should be ok. It exits futher back and no frame notch/mod is needed.

Did you swap the front sump oil pan for a rear one? If you did that, did you get a pan at least with a side d/s?

If not, the old front dip stick will not give you a correct reading.....

Ol blue's PO installed front blocks AFTER he hit the front sump pan (he left on) with the front differential. Some peoples kids should not be allowed to work on anything.

Well how smart am I, I went ahead and bought it. LMAO But its coming around nicely.

never thought about the dip stick issue, thanks, I will remidy that and the 78 has a 4" suspension lift so I can't imagine hitting the front axel. Haven't messed with frame yet. going to find a truck manifold i believe.

You only need a pan dip stick if you have changed to a rear sump pan.

Sounds like you should be ok with the front versus rear pan sump issue with the 4" lift, I did the same thing, but have not had it out and put it thru it paces yet.

And x2 on just getting a passenger side truck manifold, new or if all else fails a JY one, just insp a used one REAL well and put a straight edge on the mating surface to look for warpage.

What motor mounts did you use?? Ck these guys out.
