Front differential cover replacement needed.

Hi guys,

My front differential cover is over 10 years old and is rusted out.

Are there any aftermarket differential covers for the front? I just hate replacing OEM parts with the same OEM parts.

Thanks

I run with the Mag-Hytec on the front, rear, and trans. Very sturdy, o-ring sealed, and dipsticks front and rear. Makes it very easy to check diff fluid.

Also, if you are lifted they look great. Actually they look great anyway.

I have the SOLID industries cover. $85 Any cover that fits the Dana 60 will fit the Dana 50 in the Excursion with some exceptions. Some covers stick out too far and will interfere with the steering.

Dana 60 Cover - Differential Covers - Spyntec Industries LLC.

look around. There are tons of different ones.

I was just researching this yesterday. RiffRaff has VERY competitive prices on their diff covers. Most of their prices are better than Summit and 4Wheel parts.

I am not looking for the top of the line cover, but what is the best bang for the buck?

My opinion here: I am going with a cover that has a drain and fill plug so I don't have to pull the darn thing off every time I need to change the fluid. The cheaper covers don't provide those...

I understand that thought, but isn't the fluid good for over 100,000 miles.

The rear Synthetic fluidis good for 100K under normal service, 50k under severe service.

If you go into deep water that will submerge the axles, then you need to change the fluid after each submersion. (or after a day of playing in the deep water.) Sort of like heavy off roading,,, such as crossing creek beds, flooded roads, going too far on a boat ramp, etc.

The same schedule goes for the front axle, except Ford put normal 79W-80 in the diff.

If you shop around, even OEM aluminum covers are more than the $85 for the Solid axle cover I listed above. From what I found, that one is the best bang for the buck by far for a better differential cover. You can get a OEM steel unit from Tousley Ford for 30 bucks and that is about the cheapest route.

If you do real any off-roading where crossing water is the norm, you will need those drain and fill plugs. Some folks just live out in the sticks and frequently find themselves driving in water often. That is what I am talking about.

Mag-Hytec

I also have the Mag-Hytec Front, Rear and Trans Pan. They are great but a little pricey. The ability to check and change the fluid at any time is well worth it. Plus the magnetic dip stick and drain plugs have the ability to catch metal particles. I got all three from Throughbred Diesel and used AMSOil in the front and rear. They are easy to install and look great.

Here is what I did with my front and rear.
2005 Excusrion (EB) 4x4

Front Mag-Hytech 60-FF, 4 quarts AMSOil (buy 5) of 75W90 and 1 (4oz tube) of AMSOil Slip Lock. Cover bolts 5/16 allen socket (torque to 20-25 ft lbs).
<O</O
<O</ORear Mag-Hytech 12-10.25-10.5, 6 quarts AMSOil (buy 7) of 75W140 and 2 (4oz tubes) of AMSOil Slip Lock, 3/16” allen (drain/fill plug), ¼” hex socket tighten to16 ft/lbs.

Good Luck on your choice.
