76 highboy 390 428 460?

I got a 76 f250 that someone swapped in a 390 wit a 4spd. I was wondering if a 428 would be better or a 460. I have a 428 sitting in my shop. Also cant decide on 4sp or 5spd wit a 460 or an auto thanx.

you are going to get A LOT of opions on this.

I'll just ask:
1. What are you doing with this truck (DD, offroading, etc)?
2. Is there anything wrong with the 390?

390 is the same exact engine (except for the stroke) as a 360, the only available V8 in 1968/76 F100/250 4WD's, so there was nothing to swapping it in.

460 not available with 4WD or with a M/T until 1983, uses a hydraulic clutch. All 1968/82 460's came w/a C6.

460 introduced in 1973 F100/350's, no 460's installed in F100's after 1976, in F150's after 1979.

Go with the 428.

I wish I could have a 428 just "sitting in my shop".

2x with vic_v8... what ya gonna do with the truck and what is your budget? I have grand ideas! Or low buck ones as the case may be.

If installing a 428...Make sure to use the 428 only: flywheel or 410/428 flexplate, otherwise...

You know, I put a 460 in front of my stock 4 speed trans in my 74. I'm completely happy with the set up. However, I think if I could do it all over, I wouldn't have spent the money on rebuilding the 460 and buying the stuff to make it come together. It was a lot of money to invest in a truck with the fuel prices as high as they are now. She would have been just fine with the stock and strong running 360 that I took out, with as much as I can really afford to drive her these days.
I suppose it depends on why you're doing the engine swap and the purpose. With my truck, it was what I wanted to do for a long, long time, ever since I lost my old 76, that was basically set up this way (and stolen back many years ago). It was a dream of passion that I felt compelled to realize. Now, in hindsight, I see where I could have spent the money on something else more practical. It would be different if it didn't cost so damned much to run her more often. Stupid gas prices...
And there isn't ANYTHING wrong with a 390. That's a good engine for the truck you have.

sorry i guess its a 77 it originally had a 400 with a auto. I plan on running 39.5 boggers and using it for mudding. The 390 supposidly has flat tops a solid cam, balaced and blue printed years ago.

Thumbs up engine question

Biggl, Since it is already set up for a FE series the 428 should be able to spin those "mudders". It is a a pretty good torque monster. Kenny Nunez

I'd put the boggers on and see how the 390 does. My has some good power and is pretty much stock. If it's not enough for you then I'd put the 428 in.

You should drop in the 460 and sell me the 428 for my mustang.
