popping noise and smoke. HELP!!!!!

Here are the details. After running all day with no problems, I was backing up into my driveway and heard a noise coming from the engine and it was running rough and smoking. I removed the doghouse and the noise was quite loud! I shut it off and called a buddy over to show him. When I started it for him it made the noise for a minute and then it went away. I was thinking that it was a stuck lifter and that it unstuck itself. Today i started it and the noise is back along with the smoke. I was trying to pinpoint the noise with a mechanics stethoscope and found that after removing the air filter the noise seemed to originate from there. It is a loud popping type noise. After reading through some of the other threads I seem to be completely lost on where to start. This is my work truck and I need it desperately!! Thanks again guys. Here is a link to a ten second video of the noise. dieselnoise.mp4 video by rotralisabe | Photobucket

The video really doesnt do it justice compared to hearing it in person but I hope it helps. Thanks

probably just a spinning rod bearing, blocking oil flow to rod bearing then unblocking by spining.

That doesnt explain the smoke. the smoke is most definately a raw diesel smell to it.

I just loosened the injector lines one at a time and the drivers side 2nd one back from the front didnt change anything. I already ordered a new one and it will be in tomorrow. Ill keep you posted. Could the injector cause this kind of situation? It almost sounds like a backfire out of the intake.

i've heard of bad injectors making a pretty bad knocking noise, but loosening the line to the offending injector is sure to make the noise stop until the line is retightened.
the extra noise you got when lifting the air cleaner seems normal, the background noise is what we need to be focus on here.
from the video it sounds like the noise is coming equally from all 8 cylinders, does that sound right to you? to me, it doesn't sound like just one cylinder making noise

How about you change your oil and add two quarts of marvel mystery oil and add some to your diesel to and go from there

i had a pre-cup fall out of my head and bang around on the deck surface and piston. that was the result of ether and glow plugs from the previous owner. i ended up putting in a "new to me"engine. i hope thats not your cause of the sound. is it so loud it hurts your chest? thats what mine did

I think you are on the right track with the injector. To me it doesn't sound "even
" enough to be a valve, which would have been my first 2 guesses without hearing the vid.

In my unprofessional opinion it sounds like one cylinder but not sure.

I have a new video here. VIDEO0029.mp4 video by rotralisabe | Photobucket

The valves and rockers seem to be ok. I am going to pick up the injector and install in a little bit.
