1989 ford f-350 duelly 460 engine

Had gas overflowing after filling both tanks. Now I am having major problems with fuel . My truck has left me on the side of the road many times. Have done all the tests . Replaced external fuel pump ( not the problem ) replaced fuel filter ( not the problem ) would appreciate any help... At this point I think I have it narrowed down to replacing the EEC just because during one of the tests that required jumper ing the control module with key off position , the fuel pump came on and did not turn off until I removed the jumper wire ???? Ok just looked it up the tests I did were using DLC and STI. Please help.... Jeff

I believe the pump is supposed to stay on when you jump the terminals...

You filled both tanks, were both tanks overflowing, or just one tank? When your truck leaves you stranded, is that on both tanks? Do both internal tank pumps run?

yes both tanks

Yah , I thought maybe i could bypass the bad fuel pump. By switching tanks to find the bad pump. But i loose power and it dies with either tank. The overflow thing hasnt happened in awhile. I am dealing with the truck running good for a couple miles on average hen its cold. Then cutting out suddenly and maybe after sitting for 15 minutes it will start again. I had to have it towed the other day so the problem is getting worse.waiting on your reply thanx

Maybe a relay? Same relay for both pumps? Im just guessing at this point. What you would really need to do is check fuel pressure when it happens and see if you have anything. Would be weird to have 2 pumps go bad at the same time, or at least both not work at the same time.

I have seen this happen before and it's usually a fuel pump going out. It always seemed to happen more when it was hot out like the pump would overheat and seize up, then after being stranded on the side of the road it would work again after coolong off or something.

All 3 fuel pumps are working. Even when the truck dies i still have fuel pressure because i have a fuel gauge hooked up to the fuel rail while i am running. The fuel mode has corrosion around the contacts but it tests good. I run this truck at 3000rpm for about 5-10 minutes then it shuts off and wont start . Any ideas ?..???

Fuel pump module more than likely bad. The pumps have a spring loaded check valve that is suppose to stay closed if the other pump is running. When the check valve fails, it will back feed through the failed pump causing the fuel tank to over flow. If ones bad, the other one isn't to far behind so replace them both. You will have to replace the entire fuel pump modules. This pertains to trucks without a frame mounted selector valve.

Fuel selector switch? Are you sure both tanks are full when problem occurs.

What is the fuel pressure when the truck is running/not running(won't start)?

Assuming you have good pressure it should be easy enough to check for spark: Ford Ignition Module Test. Fender Mounted Module (ICM).

The procedure is written for fender mounted Ignition Control Module (ICM) equipped vehicles, but the concept is the the same for distributor mounted vehicles too.

Now she wont start at all. I have spark at all the plugs and coil...Had to pull distrubiter to take off the ignition control module. I marked everything. Got it all right back where it came from and now it wont start. At all....Very frusterated at this point...
