Wiper Motor ID

Here is my wiper motor. It flunked a bench test today. The passenger side worked for 20 seconds yesterday but has not worked since then. The motor gets hot but doesn't do anything. Is this an original type motor or the Jeep motor? I will be looking for a working replacement ,just need to know what I am looking for, and I will keep this one to use as learning experience for rebuilding.
I opened it up after reading about the grease issues but the grease was soft and wet.

Me too!

I have a similar one in my 52 F6 fire truck. I think it's the optional stock electric motor used initally on the parcel delivery trucks. My passenger side flunked years ago and I only grew to despise the aftermarket selection in this department and found nothing about these units. My 51 F5 has the stock vaccume setup. If these stock electrics are availabe-ish, I would like to convert it in addition to repairing my F6's, so I am in the market for two of these.

I've got a couple of these. Yes, it is the original equipment (optional). The one that came with my truck does like yours; makes heat and little else. I got one at a swap meet and it works fine, at least without blades on it. I haven't tried it in the rain yet, hope I never have to. For 12v use I have a big dropping resistor, they draw surprisingly little current (4.5 amps at 6v).

The problem I've run into is the stems that the wiper blades snap onto. They are NLA and mine are pretty well stripped. According to several on here, they eventually won't work as there is no positive connection to the drive thimble (they just slip) https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-splines.html

Atleast I have a starting point knowing that it is stock equipment now. I noticed on the disassemble that the timballs were very loose and I was thinking then that I might have to drill and pin them or some other creative way to get the slack out. I suppose I will dash dive every 51 or 52 model car or truck I can find in my area until I find one.
Maybe I can get one out of two if I can find another.

Mine wouldn't run when I first pulled it out of the truck.

Then I realized I was hooking the power to it all wrong. No ground goes to any of the wires/leads. The ground goes to the body/frame.

Still mine would not turn. I was using my battery charger set to 6 volts. Then I switched it to 12 volts and WHAM! it jumped to life. I guess I jump started it.

It has worked ever since on 6 volts positive ground (after I removed the solid old grease and replaced it with a good white lithium grease, that is)

When it did run Saturday it sounded like shaking a tin can half full of bb's.
I did try to shock it to life with a 12 volt lawnmower battery also. It just got hotter. Does the manual have a rebuild proceedure?
I am waiting for a manual to arrive. It will make for a great winter bench project.

There is a picture of the motor in the Shop Manual, but that's about it.

Is it still free by hand? Might need to check into a shop that rebuilds electrical motors.

6V wiper motor was stock in all 52s. It was an option in 51s and standard in all 51 Extra cab equipped trucks.

I have several of these motors, but haven't tried any of them. I also would suggest in finding a local electrical motor rebuilding place to see if they can at least look at it.

Are you sure it was stock for "all" 52's? My 52 has the vacuum unit as does the one 52 in the local junkyard. There is a 5 star 51 there also I have been getting parts off of like the complete heater box. It was a vacuum unit as well. Were they prone to go out and just replaced with vacuum units?

Hey Kevin,
If you grow tired of fixing the original wiper set you have there ...
We used a set from Specialty Power Windows that fit fine up in there
with the cowl & defrost vents. Unfortunately wiper kits are kind of pricey.

I have a local electric motor repair shop. I was going to check their price against replacement costs. The costs to have the motor itself repaired is definately cheaper I am certain. There is a problem with the driver's side gear box. The arm turns independantly of the gears whichs tells me it is stripped in there behind the gear. It is rivioted in so I wanted to have another one to comapre off of before I began a tear down. There doesn't seem to a repair diagram for these things anywhere. If Bill has never even seen one like this before and there are no noticeable manufacture markings on the unit itself, then I don't think I would ever find a diagram to repair the gearbox.

I have an extra that like I said, turns slowly and gets hot, but is mechanically fine. Email me to discuss.
