Trailer Brake Controller in an SD
I have a 2001 F350 and a 2005 F250, neither of them have TBC's. Is the truck capable of controlling the trailer brakes properly without a TBC? I mostly tow an equipment trailer that weighs about 11k when loaded, I've never had a problem stopping with it or anything. My buddys truck wont control them without a TBC, I was just curious how a Super duties TBC works.
Thanks

So you don't have any brake controller at all? No aftermarket controller even? If you don't have any controller, then no - you're not using the trailer brakes AT ALL. Yes the truck can stop that much, but you'll wear the truck brakes out faster and it's very, very dangerous b/c you just can't stop as fast. Could get really scary in a panic stop situation. Your 05 has the Torqshift so if you're in Tow/Haul mode then you get engine braking as well which helps a lot - but nothing in your 01.
I suggest you get an aftermarket controller ASAP, get the right connecting harness and it's a complete plug and play operation. There's a plug somewhere up under the dash that the harness plugs right into. You'll be amazed how much better a load stops w/ trailer brakes.
You can get an integrated controller on your 05, I've got one and it works very well, but to go that route you also need the controller, a new master cylinder, and a visit to your dealer to get it turned on in the computer. Like I said it works very well but it's significantly more expensive than an aftermarket controller.

My 05 has a small hole in the fuse cover(the panel under the steering wheel that snaps in) from the previous owner, and there is a wire very similar to a phone cord tucked in there too, is this from am aftermarket TBC? I've always thought it was because the previous owner of my 05 took his 5th wheel hitch out also.
Thanks for explaining this Maverick

BTW, what did the trailer shop do to your brakes? They should have been in pristine condition!

I'm not sure exactly because my dad took it in. I know they weren't working correctly because my buddy uses it when he works for my dad and his truck (93 12 valve) couldnt stop correctly. (the 93 has a TBC)

Every state except Wyoming. Missouri and Oregon have a specific law requiring a trailer braking system if you go over a specific trailer weight.
While the weight differs, 11,000 pounds is over every limit.
