The fan hub on my 49 fllathead is on the way out. I filled it with oil a while back according to procedure and the oil just ran out of the back at the shaft. Where can I buy the parts required for a rebuild? I haven't been able to find them anywhere. The cost of shipping kinda rules out buying an exchange unit, buy the time I pay the core charge and shipping it would be a $400 hub.

Does this have the bearings inside it Ross? I thought there were press in oilite bearings that need to be changed. I have to admit, I've yet to pull apart to see, want the bits on hand to rebuild it when I do.

 

I always heard they were oilite, but it appears they are either already pressed in, or it runs cast iron directly.

 

Interesting, I guess I really need to know if my shaft is ok.

Yep, that's the one that would end up costing me almost $400 once I got it landed in Aus. I'll buy a new shaft and new spindle and have a go at mine I think, should cost only about $100.

I can call them Tuesday, all their NOS stuff is "Call for Pricing". I got into their NOS site, and I don't see any.

If it were me in your position of (cost of shipping takes the fun out of this )position . I would see if a machine shop can bore out the hub and press in a new bushing , ream it to fit and maybe even cut out a recess for a lip seal while their at it . Just a thought .

Do not fill with oiul & let it go at that. There is no efective seal at the back end of the shaft, only a dust seal. You would want to do this proceedure about every 500 miles.
Here is what the factory said at the time.
"Turn the fan pulley with the screw on top. Remove the screw, fill with engine oil let set for a few minutes, now turn the pulley with the hole downwards let the excess oil drip out".

Now turn the pulley right side up replace screw and you done lubricating it.

 

Yep, exactly what I did. There appears to be enough wear present that it can't hold even that amount of oil.
