Pulling the codes will tell you if any sensor is getting a bad reading. It may not necessarily point you in the right direction. Pull the codes, post them on FTE. Someone will be able to help.
As far as the check engine light, it is quite possible that the bulb is burned out, or someone took it out because they couldn't get it to go out. I've seen both. Examine the dash lights very closely. The CEL should come on with the key on while it does a self check.

You know what--I did see TAPE over a small section of that panel. I'll bet you the no good so-in-so that owned it before me just put tape over the light. I had noticed something over that section but just never bothered going any futher.
