Crackling and popping sound from windshield - Solved

A while back I made a comment that this was the quietest cockpit I'd ever been in, and while that's still true - Murphy didn't allow that comment to go unchecked...

I started noticing a crackling/popping/crunching sound from the lower passenger side corner of the windshield when traveling at speeds greater than 55mph. At first it was a minor annoyance as it was intermittent and difficult to repeat/diagnose. Then, once I installed my bug deflector and changed the air flow, the noise immediately went from "what sound?" to "WTF is that racket?" The faster I drove, the louder it got.

Upon inspection, I found that the rubber molding on the passenger side of the windshield was loose, and no longer attached to the windshield. See picture:

So I taped it down to see if the loose molding was the problem.

This got rid of about 90% of the noise, and pretty much confirmed my theory. When I brought it in to the dealer, they had a mobile windshield/window shop reseal the molding with what looked like black caulk - covered under warranty. The crackling noise is now totally gone (wind noise still there). So if you have a similar noise, check your molding.

Good explanation and photo, thanks for sharing. Hope I don't have a similar problem but if I do will know where to start.

Hey RetiredSoon,

Have you checked to see if the molding was your problem too? I was afraid that the sound was coming from some loose trim in the dash - I really didn't want to pull the dash. Hopefully your sound is as easily treated as mine was.
