Rebuilding E4OD

Marty,
Here is the info, from the zip file, regarding the VSS:
"Erratic Shifts
Bad VSS
Can cause erratic shifts and LU problems. May or may not set code 29/452 (VSS speed sensor signal to low).
Note
VSS is located in transmission tail housing or differential.
To check VSS
1. Remove 2-wire connector end.
2. Hook DVOM meter leads to pins on sensor. It doesn't matter which way you hook up the red or black leads.
3. Set scale to AC voltage / 0 to 40 volt scale.
4. Raise vehicle so rear wheels are off ground.
5. Start vehicle, put in 'D" and make transmission upshift. Watch meter.
6. You must see an increase in AC voltage or VSS is bad."
The part# for the VSS (in differential) is F3TZ-2L373-A.

Damb, if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. Please check my profile as I would like a copy of this file also. Thanks

E150 tranny shift problems
Dieselzen -- Thanks for the info. The zip file looks like it'll be a godsend!! After previously reporting hard shifts, speedo erratic, and no cruise control, also ABS light on constant, and the light on the shift lever flashing, then going away entirely -- I really didn't konw what to think. All this said, Today I changed the VSS (speed sensor) on the top of the pumpkin and took it for a drive -------- Speedo was rock solid on speed, and smooth transmission shifts. just like glass.
Still a ABS light on steady, and no cruise control capability - but at least the tranny is smooth and the speedo works again.
Now if I can just isolate the dang squeeling belt problem.....

Marty,
Regarding the ABS light and cruise control.
What did the end of the VSS look like when you pulled it? Did it have metal filings on it?
Are the yellow abs light and the red brake lights on, or, is the yellow light on but the red light is off?
What I'd do is draw (or have them drawn) the codes from the computer and record them (if there are any). Then I'd un-hook the battery(s) for about 20 minutes then hook it/them back up. Then I'd take the van out for a spin to see if the ABS light comes on and some highway driving to see if the cruise control works. If so I'd draw the codes again and troubleshoot from there.
When you un-hook the battery(s), you take power away from the computer, and it clears the memory of any codes stored. This might, or might not, help with the ABS light and the cruise control. R.A.

Righto - The VSS was pretty clean really - little square sensor exposed, few if any metal shavings stuck to it - I had run the engine up with a meter attached to the pins, and it only came up to about 4 vac - so I changed it -- now the speedo works extremely smoothly - also shifts have improved. smooth shifts, no hard shifts, etc.
The ABS light is on - not the red brake light. Red light is only on when you first turn the key on - then off when the engine starts. When I did the "code test" according to the chiltons, it indicated the defrost or a/c was on during test.. and followed by 1111 after. I still need to check the rear brakes (shoes) and see if there's a problem there I guess, before I shell out 70 bucks a side for the front speed sensors.
Thanks !
