First time engine work on gas pig, efi 351w

victim is a 97 f350 4x4, 351, e4od

rebuilt e4od, engine has 140k on it, little more for my liking

I've looked on craigslist at complete engines for sale, found one with 45k for $450 and 80k miles for $350, most likely will buy one and throw it on the stand and dress it up over a few weeks

I'm hoping to get the lower mile one but have not heard back from the sellers yet, plans are to
* oil pump+pickup replace
*oil pan reseal
*want to pull out the lower intake bolts and replace em for good measure, will have helicoils ready lol
*replacing water pump(hopefully wont turn into a broken timing cover)
*lastly was thinking about putting in 1.7 roller rockers

I'll keep adding to this thread and post pictures hopefully it will help someone some day

I do have some questions though

first how does the lower intake seal? gasket or gasket + silicone on both sides? I've used all kinds and found "The right stuff" to be my favorite, I'm guessing the same would apply for timing cover/gasket aswell

I'm a diesel guy, next question has to do with distributor, does it come out in order to prime the new oil pump? how exactly do I prime it?

pretty excited about this, first gas job I've gotten into, all diesel work prior

Gasket + a light coat of RTV to stick them in place is my preferred way to do intake gaskets, I generally don't use RTV on other gaskets unless there is pitting on the gasket surface.

Distributor comes out to prime the pump, just tape a socket on a 6" extension(so you don't lose it in the motor) and drive the oil pump shaft with a drill counter clockwise.
