ignition box replacement?

We're replacing a 1976 360 with a 300 six. The 360 has the silver box, ignition box I would guess and I"m wondering if I can use the box or something else on the 300. Both haver electronic ignitions. Is there any market for a 360 block or heads?

Look on the ignition module above where the wires feed out for a colored plastic square used for identification. 1976: It should be blue.

Module mounted to the left (drivers) side inner fender apron. Genuine Ford marked MOTORCRAFT and has Ford ID numbers molded on it (one 1976/78 example: D6AE-12A199-A1A).

DuraSpark Electronic Ignition introduced in 1974, but not all vehicles came with it until 1976.

Blue module same regardless of engine size, makes no difference if a Passenger Car/F100/350/Bronco/Econoline.

1U2Z-12A199-AA (replaced D6AZ-12A199-A & D9VZ-12A199-A) .. DuraSpark Ignition Module - Blue (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford.

Applications: Myriad 1976/97 FoMoCo vehicles.

How would I go about hooking up the ignition box to the distributor on the 300?

If the 300 has the same connector coming from the distributor as the 360 did (3 terminals with ORANGE, PURPLE and BLACK wires), then you hook up the 300 in the exact same way as the 360.

The distributor on the 300 only has 2 wires. The distributor connections that were on the 360 are still in the truck so I'm thinking of splicing into them but would rather be sure before I fry something.

Have you already hooked up the coil....cause it only has two wires going to it. I think you should have three going to dist, unless your running into a duraspark 1 vs duraspark 2 issue. They are not the same. a 360 is a older model76 and under I beleive, and might have had a duraspark 1 system on it....77,78,79 all had duraspark 2 system. the ignition boxes are diffrent also, dura 1 has two plugs, one with 4 wires and the other2 wires, duras 2 has one with 4 wires and one with threee wires, that go to dist. From what I can remember.

1974/79: There are FIVE different ignition modules.

1974 module is 1974 only / 1975 module is 1975 only / 1976, there are THREE different modules, one was only used in some CA vehicles.

Modules have a colored plastic square above where the wires feed out, used to ID them. The OP needs to verify which module his truck has.

ALL 1976/79's use the SAME module if it has a BLUE square. Blue Motorcraft modules marked with ID numbers:

D6AE-12A199-A1A or A2A or A1B or A2B / D8VE-12A199-A1B or A2B or A1C or A2C

1977: The V8 dizzy cap changed, has 9 male ends and an adapter below that the cap clips onto.

A factory Ford distributor with electronic ignition should have 3 wires coming out. Please post a picture. Sounds like you have something aftermarket (maybe a Pertronix kit in a points distributor). Do not splice anything because we don't know what you're looking at. You will only create issues that we will have to help you undo later.

the three modules in 76 i beleive were duraspark1 and duraspark 2 and duraspark2 with elevation spark retard (yellow block on module), that 76 he has his 360 in is probably a duraspark 1 which has a diffrent plug on the module, and not compatable with a durasprk1 distributo. The plugs don't match up. Maybe a 240 six cylinder dist would work . Did they offer a 300 six in 76??? or was it still a 240???

He needs to respond to my question first. I want to keep things simple.

To answer your questions though, Duraspark 1 should be gone by 76 (someone can correct me if I'm wrong). All Durasparks have a hot-in-START spark retard function; the degree of retard varies with grommet color. Elevation does not tie in to the common blue-grommet Duraspark 2 module.

Back to the main topic, OP please post a pic of what is coming out of your distributor, a shot with the cap off would be nice too.

Slightly off topic but... Is your truck the 360 coming out of a 4x4? If so, i will throw you a bone for the powersteering pump bracket.
