Changed fuel filters-won't stay running

08 f250 with 6.4, changed both fuel filters this afternoon. Truck started right up then died. Did some reading after that & primed it many times with key on/off. Takes a long time to start then dies after 5 sec or so. Sounds normal when it runs. Wrench light is now on. Filter lids are on tight, pulled top one back off & it didn't have alot of fuel in the bowl so I turned the key to run the pump with the lid cracked & it filled all the way up. Still does the same thing. Takes 10 seconds to start if it even does, then dies after 5 seconds or so. Also disconnected batterys for 45 minutes hoping to reset wrench light. Didn't work. Anyone know what the heck happened? Trying to prevent problems with the truck & it backfired on me!

Don't suppose you have a code reader or maybe a tuner that displays DTC's? With a Wrench symbol, knowing the DTC's is key.

Sure don't. Probably have to get the thing towed tomorrow.

try the fuel cutoff switch to see if it tripped. I once had to hold mine down while cranking to get it to fire and stay running.

It is located on the side of dash, passenger side. Open the door and you will see the access door on the side of the dash.

Before you tow it and let it sit at the dealer, many auto parts stores loan out code readers for free.

Got it fixed. Air in the system. Had to remove the 17mm banjo bolt on the rear of the fuel cooler. Hold a rag over to block fuel flow & it still went all over. Just let the line hang but be careful not to lose any washers. Prime again & start, let run for a little bit then shut off & reassemble. Fixed me right up, wrench light went off allready too. Thanks to Chris at C & C diesel in Bennington, NE.

Hopefully this may help others in the future.

That would have been the next step but messy. Some use a rubber hose and then put it in a container to bleed the system.

You can bleed the air out thru the schrader valve (looks like a tire valve). See photo.

You could bleed the air thru the Schrader Valve. (Looks like a tire valve). Actron makes a fuel pressure tester with a bleed valve that attaches to the valve.

The schrader valve is for low pressure side bleeding, the high pressure side has to be done from the other banjo fitting.

If you properly purge the air out of the LP side with the key cycling (more than the six cycles in the manual, at least 10 while listening for air returning to the tank) you will not have to purge the HP side.

If you try to start without purging the LP side it can force air into the HP side and then you'll be dead in the water until you do the HP purge. Getting air into the HP side can also cause damage to the HPFP.

I recommend printing these docs out and keeping them in the truck so you have them available should you have an issue.
