Looking for 390 crank and rods

I see we don't have a parts wanted/for sale so I'll post up a thread fro this.

Bill, if it needs to come down or move it feel free.

I'm kinda switching gears here as I was going to simply rebuild my 352, but the performance bug has bitten me and I need to scare up the aforementioned parts. Love to get 'em locally and avoid shipping!!!

If someone has an extra 390 crank and rods (or even just the crank!!) or knows where I can source them in the PHX area or nearby let me know.

Thanks,

JIM

You need a 360 or 390 block to make a 390. The 352 stock block will be thin walled by taking it out .050 to 390 standard bore. .060 are maxim bore on this block. With the temps here it will overheat.

A 390 crank kit can be had locally. Crankshaft Kit Remanufactured | 1969 Ford F100 1/2 ton P/U 2WD 8 Cylinders H 6.4L 2BL OHV | AutoZone.com

I didn't know Autozone would have this crank available....
I'm not planning a 390 build. Just want the crank and rods unless I can find a piston/rod combo that will allow the use of my original 352 rods which I understand are supposed to be superior to the 390 rods if a bit longer....

390 crank and 352 rods places the piston above the block surface. They are not compatible together to make a combo unless you use custom made pistons that change the pin height.

A 360 is a 4.05 bore using a 352 crank and rods. 3.50 stroke
A 352 is a 4.00 bore using a 352 crank and rods. 3.50 stroke
A 390 is a 4.05 bore using a 390 crank and rods. 3.78 Stroke

352 rods are 6.538 to 6.542
390 rods are 6.486 to 6.490

Just what combo are you looking for?

Garbz,

I was just looking to use my case bored .030 over and a 390 rotating assembly for a 383cid motor. I had heard about use of 352 rods with a 390 crank and figured if I could find pistons with a compatible compression height I would use those, or some i could machine the rod length difference off the top. I know the 390 rods with that crank would be the easy route and hope to find those parts for this build.

Ok, sounds like a decent combo. My concern would be shaving the piston crowns and thin walling them.

Will your 352 clean up at .030?

I think it will clean up with a hone.... Seriously, it's in very good condition. I do not have an ID Micrometer but i feel no ring ridge, see no gouging and a caliper measures it at 4.00. Granted that's not a good enough measurement for me, but after all three observations I'll be surprised if it needs more than .010 machined away. I'll let my builder worry about that. For now I just want to source the crank (will inquire at autozone and go that route if crank isn't too undersized) and a set of rods. Will chose pistons with builder hopefully next week. This assumes i can find the crank and rods soon.

Thanks!

Dave and Bill,

I picked up a good used (and running) '72 390 with working C6 attached. I'm still planning on using the original motor from my truck (with the 390 crank/rods) at this point and am hoping the C6 fits my motor as well (in case that Cruise O gives up one day). Think I paid a good price too. It's complete. Trans is still attached. Will pick up this weekend.

As long as the C6 is attached to a FE it will bolt to any other FE.

Jim, Great find! consider building the 390- it's gonna cost about the same as the 352 to build, the end product will be lot's better.

I know it Bill, but it won't be the "original" motor block and I have this neurosis.....

Anyone know when Ford started swapping over to hardened exhaust seats? If that upgrade is in these heads then I will definitely use those....

There is no way visually to tell the 352 from the 390 block unless it is a later reverse 105

And we will never tell.......
