Rattling shift lever 1999 automatic

My shift lever is about to drive me crazy when its supposed to be driving me around town. I am suspecting that there should be a bushing or spring to keep it from rattling. There is some play in it, but if I rest my hand on the lever the rattle goes away. Anyone have exploded diagram or similar or been in there and know how its put together?

Look up under the dash at the colum and there should be a bracket above the main colum bracket that has a torx head bolt that will tighen up the shift lever. Use a light and shake the lever while you look and you will see it.

Looks like it will be a week or so before I can check it out, but will post what I come up with. Thanks for the response!

Well I took a look today. I found the bracket and indeed the play is coming from there. BUT its not that the bracket is loose, it looks like there should be some sort of grommet material in there. I did in fact find some leftover stuff in the area. I think the play is coming from that being missing. will have to stop into a ford dealer and see if there is a replaceable part that I can get.

So today I got to messing around with it. I got tired of the rattle, but hadnt had time to stop in the ford dealer to find about a replacement bushing. Figured I might be able to make something out of gasket material that would get me by. Got in there and realized that to get at the torq screws would require removal of the gauge face I got really really lazy and did some redneck fixing.

using thin cardboard I just slipped some in there, was going to trim them and then realized it could slip out, so left them full length. Yeah its ghetto, but I think it is doing the trick.
