Teach me about D60 front axles...

Of the non-HP variety.

I'm interested in learning about the low pinion, open knuckle versions. What years were they available, what were they in, etc., etc.

And how often can you find one for sale? Being that they're a D60 front, they're still strong as say, a GM D60 front, right? I know the HP is the best but for my '75 Highboy, I'd like to stick with year-specific drivetrain parts so a D60LP is looking to fit my bill.

Lets hear about them.

The LP60's were standard equipment under 74-77 crew cabs, i believe they were optional under the 74-77 highboys as well.

The 74/75 LP60 was closed knuckle/drum brake, 76/77 LP60 was open knuckle/disc brake.

I believe all four years were of the king pin knuckle design (the 76/77 may have been ball joint knuckles but i can't recall at the moment).

The LP60 shares the very same outers, from u-joint to lockout, as the D44HD.

IIRC the only difference between the two is ring gear diameter, the LP60 being .75" larger.

So all in all the LP60 isn't much of and upgrade over the D44HD.

yeah, I don't know the specifics but I know they are not considered an upgrade over a d44 front. The d44's may even be more desireable since they are high pinion at least.

Anybody have pics of this D60LP?

I've seen few pics but that was a while back. I'd like to see current pics here in this thread of a bunch of them to compare.
